The cast agreed to do the co-ed shower scene only if Verhoeven agreed to direct the scene naked, which he did.[7][9] Verhoeven found it strange "Americans get more upset about nudity than ultra-violence. I am constantly amazed about that. I mean, I haven't seen any sex scenes in American film that are anything other than completely boring. A bare breast is more difficult to get through the censors than a body riddled with bullets."

Anything but the ultra high end (and late) VCR models (which would have had a frame buffer) would also cause super wear to the tape if you kept it paused around one place. 220

u/FriendlyBarbarian Oct 21 '21

Airplane! came out in 1982, had a full on bare breast shot for a couple of seconds and was rated PG

91

u/BDMayhem Oct 21 '21

That was before PG-13 existed.

118

u/FriendlyBarbarian Oct 21 '21

And that level of nudity would generally net a movie an R-rating anyways. It’s just a pair of big boobs jiggling on screen.

The only time it’s granted a PG-13 is when it’s brief and tasteful. Titanic, Across the Universe, etc

this is my constant source of amazement as a finn too. we grew up going to sauna with our family members, so to the point where I was 18 I had seen all my siblings, parents, grandparents etc. naked and thought nothing of non-sexual nakedness.

I was travelling in the USA in my 20s and somehow the sauna culture came up and I told I had been in sauna with my brothers etc. and I was told they were sorry that I had been subjected to such abuse.

the inability to separate sexual and non-sexual nakedness is really odd, especially when the same people can still accept that for example a gyno isn't getting off by probing us down there.

on this account: I spent two weeks in the US a couple years ago and was SO excited to finally see a bit of the US and dive into US food culture. Especially beef ribs! Sadly at our restaurant of choice for this occasion I had both bad service and the worst ribs of my life. This still bothers me tbh... I have to go back at some point just to eat better ribs than last time.

Edit: thanks for all your recommendations! Yes it was in the north and I fucked up by choosing a yankee restaurant to serve me my first ribs ;-) please forgive an unsuspecting twentysomething tourist on his first US visit. I‘ll make sure to visit some southern states next time and indulge myself in bbq :)

76

BBQ beef ribs aren't super common. Bbq ribs are usually pork.

If there is a place that is exceptionally good at doing BBQ brisket, I'd consider getting their beef ribs. Texas is probably where you'd be more likely to find that.

Memphis does pork ribs fantastically.

13

u/sarcazm Oct 21 '21

Your best bet to ensure you have great American ribs is 2-fold.

  1. Always get recommendations from the locals.

  2. Tell the restaurant manager you are visiting from outside the States and you are looking for traditional American ribs (something to write home about).

This will ensure that you'll receive great service, the manager will make sure you get the best ribs on the menu, and the manager will come by your table to make sure you got what you wanted.

It's the same in Germany; the sauna and pool at my gym is nude and mixed. I've showered naked next to mixed groups of strangers more often than I could count.

And that's nothing compared to the big Thermes, where there are hundreds of naked people at any given time, and even the locker rooms can be mixed.

He's Dutch. We're not prude.

504

u/Szeharazade Oct 21 '21

But that's changing very fast here in Holland.

When I grew up in the 80s there were topless women everywhere on the beaches, now it is becoming a rare sight. Also these days at gyms and schools people are really reluctant to shower naked together.

I think it has to do with that people became more insecure about their body image (seeing only "perfect" people on social media etc.) and because of mass-immigration from 3rd-world countries.

557

u/LaoBa Oct 21 '21

Yes and smartphones so people are more wary of being photographed/filmed. It's a pity.

Smartphones have an effect of course, but it seems to be more of cultural thing. It started to shift in the early 90s, mostly as a counter-movement where being topless at the beach started be seen as something your parents would do. By 2000s very few young people did it and it became something only old people did.

There's actually been a bit of a reversal lately where being topless (or going to nude beaches) is starting to get more popular again. But nothing close to the 70s of course.

I’ve always loved this movie. Finding out it abandoned most, if not all of the themes from the book it’s based off, was, a journey.

983

u/The-Lord-Moccasin Oct 21 '21

I clearly remember, when I was young, watching the scene where a cow getting mauled by a bug is censored, followed by graphic footage of unauthorized colonists who were also murdered.

I was vaguely thinking "That's funny how they censored a cow's murder but not people's, almost like" -- brick hits my head -- "they respect disobedient citizens less than cattle..." Totally opened my eyes to it being much more than an overdramatic sci-fi action flick, and the first "deep" detail of that sort I'd ever noticed in a film. Glorious.

341

u/thedudeabides138 Oct 21 '21

The film has deep and excellent satire if you look hard enough.

241

u/Desembler Oct 21 '21

Don't even have to look that hard. Its kind of like seeing an ant on the ground and then realizing the ground is covered in ants, as soon as you realize or it is pointed out to you that it is satire suddenly its beating you over the head with it in the best way possible.

It’s a movie that directly places you inside a fascist society. That’s what’s so cool about it, it doesn’t try to critique fascism directly, it just sticks you right in the middle of a story where the hero’s are fascists and let’s you observe.

29

u/wiithepiiple Oct 21 '21

It's not just placing you in fascist society, but showing you how fascist propaganda works. The entire movie is constructed as an in-universe fascist propaganda piece. Breaking the 4th wall with a "would you like to know more?" directed to the audience at the end implies that the entire story of a blond-haired, blue-eyed soldier overcoming adversity, becoming a war hero, and getting the girl are all just propaganda to justify their war machine.

I also saw the movie before I read the book and I had some real feels about the movie afterwards. (See also: Dune)

That said, Starship Troopers is the most extreme example I can think of where the movie deviated so far from the book and yet I still love both the book and the movie. Typically anything that deviated this so far I would either hate outright or feel 'meh' about at best.

(The live action sequels are absolute trash though. Good lord.)

Edit: I love all the other examples people are giving, especially the ones where I'm not familiar with both works. Thanks, y'all!

230

Wait, which Dune movie(aside: I love that this can be a question now)? Because I cannot imagine how weird it would be to watch the David Lynch movie before reading the book haha.

174

I saw Dune (1984) as a teenager in the 80's and then read the book in the late 90's. So very very strange. Then we got the made for TV movies in the early 2000's which were more accurate than Lynch's Dune in some ways but definitely had other issues.

146

u/Zizhou Oct 21 '21

Yeah, the two SciFi channel miniseries were great...except for the sub-shoestring budget that they were filmed on. Like, my god, I've seen student films with better production values. On the directors cut of Naked Gun (2 I think) they said they had a choice between having a nudie scene or something else like a swear word or someones butt or something. So they had the giant condom sex scene.

Same directors for Airplane, during the chaos on the plane a random woman runs full breast in front of the scene jiggles for a second then leaves, for absolutely no reason.

The director's commentary is highly entertaining if you can find it; the directors have a natural laugh and review of the whole thing. Yellowbeard's a pirate movie with Cheech and Chong, and a couple Monty Python members as well. It had a several scenes with tits and even one or two with bush if I remember correctly, and jokes about rape/adult matters throughout. Still rated PG to this day

I really like scenes like this, especially in things like anime, not because i want to look at tits or cocks, but because censoring it just brings more attention to it and makes it seem more sexual than it is

69

u/WhapXI Oct 21 '21

Yeah like maybe if you’re 13 years old and have never seen a titty then it’s mind-blowing stuff. But I would expect anyone who’s an adult to be able to deal with seeing a nipple in a non-sexual context without going wild about it.

34

u/we_are_sex_bobomb Oct 21 '21

Exactly, there’s really nothing sexual about the scene other than the fact that it’s young attractive people. But they’re just bathing and talking about everyday stuff. It’s as far from a “sex” scene as you can get.

Test audiences, regardless of gender, strongly felt that a woman could not love two men at once, so scenes which portrayed this were cut. These audiences also felt it was immoral for Carmen to choose a career ahead of being loyal to Rico, to the extent that many commented that, in so doing, Carmen should have been the one to die instead of Dizzy.

I swear I've never seen anything about test audiences that hasn't made them sound dumb as fuck.

180

u/f1111111111111111111 Oct 21 '21

A lot of test audience feedback is guided by studio execs to make changes they wanted all along.

Biased and leading questions with enough people can give you the desired outcome to enforce the changes the director would probably resist if asked directly.
There will usually be something in the contract enforcing the feedback of test screenings.

I am legend should have had a brilliant ending but the test feedback ruined it and the studio got the happier ending they wanted.

42

u/TheSweetestKill Oct 21 '21

A lot of test audience feedback is guided by studio execs to make changes they wanted all along.

I'm reminded of Office Space, and the studio execs wanting to cut Geto Boys, and thought a test audience would hate it (and tried to direct the responses to get people to say that), but everyone loved it and so it stayed in.

I remember an article that I saw few months ago that pretty much displayis the difference on how we think on this side of the Atlantic and on the other.

The article was about a swiss public servant, iirc, who was fired because she was posting nudes on several webs. The note was from a german source and this person has her face blured but you could see perfectly her breast, the same note on a US source had the face of this person perfectly visible but the breast was blured.

The irony is how the whole thing is framed as entirely non-sexual. In the dystopian future, killing bugs in service of the American Empire is the only source of gratification our troops need.

279

u/fiendishrabbit Oct 21 '21

I did military service in a mixed unit. After a while you just don't care anymore.

While everyone showered in the same room (officers offered separate showers. The enlisted declined because it would have gotten bothersome). Generally the showers were just informally segregated (when the women showered, the guys went over to the other side. There was a central concrete&tile divider with some 10 showers on each side. Nobody discussed it, it just happened). But on friday afternoons and after field training (when everyone just wanted to get off base) those boundaries got a bit muddy because you had limited time to catch the bus off base (so it was either hurry or wait almost 2 hours for the next one) and there were just 20-24 showers for 300+ people. But at those times everyone was just too tired to care.

The only "leery" person was corporal that all the basics nicknamed "Rat" (a real piece of work that one), and the other corporals made it clear to him pretty early that if he didn't keep his eyes to himself he'd get reported and discharged.

I'm American so Stateside we never had mixed gender almost anything. But on deployment? You will, at some point run into the opposite sex taking a birdbath and at that point nobody fricking cares. Note: this is typically at the beginning of a deployment, after some structure gets built back to prude city we go. But all in all nudity isn't notable in more extreme circumstances.

Actually, I've taken group showers like that in some mixed-sports events in Europe (Ultimate Frisbee) and that was of course entirely non-sexual. Nudity is not a universal taboo.

I don't think that scene shows that the troops are non-sexual beings, just that the societal norms have evolved past moral or religious taboos towards an egalitarian, materialistic society.

I visited university friends in Sweden a while back. Of course we had a sauna with them, and of course it was a naked sauna; just bros relaxing with a sauna beer and their dicks out, no big deal, when in Rome right?

Then my friend's sister came to talk to him and they all found it hilarious that us non-Swedes tried to cover up instead of, you know, being entirely chill about meeting someone for the first time with your cock and balls hanging in the breeze.

11

u/bradmajors69 Oct 21 '21

On a work trip, went to the sauna in my German hotel. I was alone and wearing knee-length board shorts.

It was empty when I got there, but soon enough maybe 6 members of an extended family -- grandma, parents, little kids -- joined me, all completely naked.

They acted like I wasn't there, and in that moment I wished I wasn't.

I read in an interview he said they were reluctant and nervous about the co-ed shower scene. So he stripped and showed them it wasn't a big deal. So they agreed. Not that they gave him an ultimatum.

One day's filming that didn't make it into the Making Of is an apocryphal incident during the marines' mixed-gender shower scene that Verhoeven happily confirms he stripped off for too to soothe his nervous young cast.

"Yeah, sure I did that. And it helped!" he says proudly. "My DoP Jost Vacano and I, we undressed and of course then everyone started to laugh. Then we shot the scene with no problem. Jost grew up in these, let's say nudity camps [sic], so he had no problem with it. For me, it was a bit more difficult but I said to Jost, 'Hey, we need to give an example...' He said 'Of course,' and boom!" from Digital Spy interview.

That too me doesn't sound like they all said no unless you are naked, just that he decided to help ease the tension.

41

u/Ulgeguug Oct 21 '21

"Scene's over Paul, you can put your clothes back on."

"Never."

55

u/xossie Oct 21 '21

Verhoeven found it strange "Americans get more upset about nudity than ultra-violence. I am constantly amazed about that. I mean, I haven't seen any sex scenes in American film that are anything other than completely boring. A bare breast is more difficult to get through the censors than a body riddled with bullets."

13

u/Neuroticmuffin Oct 21 '21

Man i love that movie. So good. It's a perfect blend of action, sci-fi and satire on the US military complex. Plus Neil Patrick Harris? What's not to like?

9

u/Orwellian1 Oct 21 '21

I tend to partly judge movies based on how well they "did what they were going for" instead of just comparing to other movies.

Starship Troopers feels near perfect in that regard. I think Verhoeven made the exact movie he wanted to make.
