This is probably more info than you actually wanted to know, but this is already a post for math nerds, so why not.

There are a few factors: - One of the properties that these math operations (usually called functions) have is that they have some possible inputs, and some other possible outputs. The function is supposed to be like a little robot - as long as you give it a valid input, it does some specific set of steps, and gives you an output. It’s not smart - it does the exact same steps for every input. So if we omit the “multiply by 1”, what happens if we give 1 as the input? Our function would be something like “Multiply the input number by all of the integers less than the input, but greater than 1.” But if our input is 1, there are no such numbers, so the function breaks. - To fix this, you could define the function as having specially defined outputs for certain values. So we could omit the “multiply by 1” step, and just say 1! = 1 because we say so, and all numbers greater than 1 follow the normal factorial pattern. But this strategy gets complicated for more complex functions - what if you accidentally miss one of the special cases and don’t give a definition? - so it’s only used in limited circumstances (like the Fibonacci sequence, for example). - You could argue that all these protocols are only necessary if you’re actually a mathematician using fancy functions, and it’s overkill for something simple like factorial. But man, math people hate inconsistency. It’s dangerous in their field. All complicated math is built out of simple math, and if you’re not careful about the simple stuff, you’ll mess up the complicated stuff. It’s a habit that math teachers try to instill early on.

So, that’s why we always write the 1 in factorials.

The joke is actually supposed to be that the answer is correct whether you do the problem correctly or not. If you take the order wrong and go left to right, you can just take the "!" as an exclamation mark and the ans will be 5. If you do the problem correctly, you can take the "!" as factorial and the ans will be 5!=120.

They're used mostly in "combination" problems. Like how many ways can you arrange a deck of 3 cards? For 1st card, it can be any one of three. For the second, it'll be one of the two remaining because one card we already put in 1st position. And the third one will be the last remaining card.

That means we have 3 choices for 1st position, 2 for 2nd and 1 for third. Once you have this information, you can multiply them together to get the number of possible combinations. 3x2x1 = 3! = 6 different combinations.

Now if you had to figure out how many combinations you can have of a full deck of cards, with all 52 of them? Answer would be 52!.

Edit: Technically, it's actually "permutations" where we find out the number of ways in which we can arrange any or all things from a set of stuff, not combinations. Combination is how we choose things or subset/group of things from a set of stuff, mathematically speaking.

I guess it's been really long for me as well. Permutations and combinations were always taught together, I forgot that mathematically they're related but different.

Permutations takes ordering of stuff into account. Combination doesn't. Like, vanilla and chocolate is a combination but it isn't any different from chocolate and vanilla. So they're not really different combinations but they are different permutations.

The most important reason for them to exist is because they describe how many ways things can be arranged.

Imagine you have three different types of coins sitting on a table in a row (try this at home if you want). How many unique ways can you arrange them?

The answer is pretty simple: the first coin can go into any of the 3 places in a row, the second coin can only go in 2 places because the first coin filled one, and the last coin only has one spot left for it to go. So the total possible ways to arrange the coins is 3x2x1 = 6 ways.

Factorials also get huge really quickly. 10! is already more than three million. 52!, which is the number of ways you can shuffle a deck of cards, is so unbelievably huge that it's virtually guaranteed that no two fair shuffles have ever been the same in the history of mankind.

assuming the X is the multiplication symbol, order of operations means that you would do 220 x 0.5 = 110. so then 230 - 110 = 120. what am i missing? or is this a troll post?

Factorial means you multiply said number by all whole numbers below it until you reach 1, and factorial is written by adding an exclamation mark after the number. So 3! Is 3x2x1=6, 4! Is 4x3x2x1=24, 5! Is 5x4x3x2x1=120, etc.

The only non-intuitive thing to remember is that 0 factorial is 1. A factorial represents the number of ways to represent the elements in a set. 0 has 1 possible arrangement so 0 factorial is 1.
