I do not expect everyone to fully read this post, but I respect those who do. If you've been here long enough and/or you've read the previous sticky post, then you can basically skip the first two sections of this post.
For a little history on how the starter pack came to be, it all started around the caveman years in 2014 on Twitter by a user named ItsLadinaPlis with the I date black guys starter pack. That single post spawned a bunch of other starter packs, basically turning it into a meme, and leading to the creation of many forums and pages dedicated to the format, such as r/starterpacks. Somehow, the format is still really popular 6 years later and the subreddit has 1.7m members. The starter pack I mentioned officially indicates that starter packs really are meant to describe something and be relatable or make you say "ah yeah lol that IS true".
WHAT IS AN ISN'T A STARTER PACK
Now, for the difference between a starter pack and example pack:
Like I said above, starter packs describe things. You can describe almost anything, such as a place, opinion, object, person, etc. An example of a starter pack would be something like:
Reddit User Starter Pack
- Likes to start unnecessary arguments
- Is a neckbeard
- Uses dumb words like "based" and "incel"
- Thinks your opinion is wrong
- Obsessed with Marvel and Star Wars
Example packs are literally just lists of something. That's the best way to put it. Think of an example pack as a shopping list, where it's just a list of groceries you need. A starter pack would be describing a single grocery on that list or the entire store.
Here is an example of an example pack:
Movies I Watched As A Kid
- Star Wars
- Toy Story
- Spider Man
Another post that looks like a starter pack, but isn't, is almost anything with "how to" in the title (except if the post is about a "how to" like "How-To Video Starter Pack"), because that is more of a guide than a starter pack if anything.
LET'S TALK ABOUT CRITICISM
Multiple messages and drama situations have led to the discussion amongst moderators about starter packs that criticize things. I will get one thing out of the way that no, we are not censoring criticism. We are suggesting people to ever-so-slightly stray away from making starter packs that mock a certain thing, opinion, or group of people and instead start posting more about something you believe people can relate to or anything you have an interest in or are a part of.
The reasoning behind this? Well, Reddit is well-known for its absolutely lovely community that gets offended when you say things like "porn addictions are dangerous" or "people that like computers are nerds". When people bring up things like this in a supposedly harmless meme subreddit, some wholesome chonkers might go full Redditor and insult everyone they disagree with and inform you on why they're right and you're wrong. When a situation like this outbreaks the marvel dc comics superman star wars endgame moderators have to disrupt the fun and start banning people or locking the comments like pussies.
Or, in other words, criticism leads to drama, drama leads to moderator action. To prevent this, don't believe that your starter pack has to be associated with criticism.
NOW LET'S TALK ABOUT REPOSTS
Please, we beg, for the love of everyone who is sick of seeing the same god damn meme hit the front page every week, stop reposting starter packs. And if you're just an innocent user who posted something without knowing it's a repost, it's okay. We will sit you down, perhaps give you a cookie, and tell you not to do it again and give you info on how to not do it again.
Now, if you are another fucking karma farm account that copies and pastes shitty memes off Imgflip onto mainstream subreddits, then please fuck off. We typically ban these accounts even if they've only submitted here once to prevent them from submitting again and possibly warn them for what's coming for them in the various other large meme subreddits.
How do I know if what I'm posting is a repost? You can either; A. search for the starter pack on the subreddit, if it hasn't been posted before, go for it and earn those sweet internet points, or B. just don't post it. If you're really unsure and/or don't want to face the evil mods or angry 13 year olds, just make one yourself, it takes less than 10 minutes.
THAT GUY OVER THERE JUST CALLED ME A BOOGER EATER
Is there some heckin doggo that clearly does not agree with your starter pack that believes calling everyone in the comments various slurs will resolve the issue? Well don't you worry! While us moderators are humans who live in different time zones and have certain schedules, we'll most likely drop our cumsocks and tend to the issue! All as long as you be sure to report the user and/or send a message to the moderator team.
WE TRY OUR BEST
Moderating a subreddit does not provide us a payment of any sort and we're basically only volunteering as a side occupation because we care about this subreddit. We do try our best at listening to the community by starting polls whether you believe a new rule should be enforced, and we communicate daily on Discord to discuss what we do next on the subreddit. If you have any further inquiries or suggestions, message us or leave a comment. Remember to be nice to each other, read and follow the rules, and keep on starter-packing! Or fuckin idk that sounded cringy.
Thank you for reading and participating in the subreddit!
