Very specific request - looking for bike access in Brooklyn NY Community

Hi everyone! I have a very specific request (mods, remove if not allowed).

Basically I'm on a 56-day 59-day streak that I'm hoping to maintain and even while I'm traveling to Brooklyn NY for thanksgiving. I'm staying with my sister, but am trying to find access to a bike for friday, sunday, and monday. I'm going to get a day pass at Chelsea Piers BK for saturday, and while I'd gladly get day passes for each of those days, they're $60 a pop (a total of $240 for 4 days - womp). I've called all the hotels in the area that have bikes and they don't allow walk-ins.

So I'm wondering if anyone lives in a building in BK that has them and could grant me access for 30 minute rides each of those days? In turn I can venmo you some cash for a drinks or a dinner or something.

Help me keep my streak alive!

Edit: Wow! Thanks for all the creative ideas in the thread. #togetherwegofar, am I right? I'm looking into some of these options for sure and still crossing my fingers for that sweet sweet apartment gym access. I'll report back next week on if I kept the streak or not. And if you guys want to follow along, my username is tanrr.

Edit 2: Alright team, I have a plan set forward for the weekend thanks to this amazing community. I'm on track to keep my streak. Thank you!

Edit 3: for whatever reason my counting was off and turns out I had more days on my streak than I thought. Updated to the correct numbers.

UPDATE: I'm still on the streak people! A lovely redditor reached out and invited me to use their bike in their building's gym. It was so gracious and awesome, but ultimately, my plans ended up changing a bit and I didn't end up taking them up on it because on Friday I went to Chelsea Piers and found out they were doing a friendsgiving promotion! The front desk there said I can be a guest (free entry) as part of friendsgiving. Basically, I got 2 free CP days and because CP was conveniently close to where I was staying, I just ended up doing that.

67 days and counting!

If you’re simply concerned about a blue dot do a meditation class or even do an outdoor run / walk.

9

u/tanr Nov 23 '21

I specifically want to get to a 90 day streak of cycling.

76

u/ios_game_dev Nov 23 '21

If you're okay with using the Peloton app for iOS/Android, the number of compatible bikes increases dramatically. You could just get a day pass at any local gym.

13

u/lax01 Nov 23 '21

Where are you seeing a streak for cycling? I don't see that in Achievements on the Bike or within the Digital app...

25

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

Oh yeah, no, it's not a real streak, it's just something that's important to me.

10

u/FrostyTwo4146 Nov 24 '21

There are no badges that are discipline specific. It seems like this goal is just in the OPs head. If I were the OP I’d go on an outdoor run and try to follow the class plan. It still shows dedication and willingness to do something tough.

2

u/lax01 Nov 24 '21

Yeah, I'm working on 45 and 60 day streak right now - but I can't ride the bike every single day (that would be too boring) - I use the app for stretching before non-Peloton strength and HIIT workouts - used it for an outdoor run yesterday

43

u/k_lo970 Nov 23 '21 edited Nov 23 '21

I agree with the other comments outdoor content, yoga (even standing yoga), stretches, body wight, HIIT Cardio and meditations all count towards your streak. If you are trying to keep up a personal bike streak you could use the app (the subscription is included with your bike) on any old bike. You won't get the metrics but you could keep up you bike specific streak.

Edit to add: I really hope someone sneaks you in to ride. That is such a Peloton problem I love it 🤣

15

u/tanr Nov 23 '21

yeah i think getting access to a stationary bike is also tricky. And I'm not keen on riding outside as I got hit by a car while cycling outside when I lived in NYC. Hence the search for a peloton or I guess any stationary bike.

14

u/veloharris Nov 23 '21

Do you have friends in NYC with guest passes? Blink fitness in particular has a pretty loose guest policy.

19

u/nolia83 Nov 23 '21

If you join a Blink in Brooklyn, get a Gray membership and cancel immediately. You'll get 45 day access for $25.

8

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

not a bad idea. I might just do this if I can't get peloton access.

2

u/k_lo970 Nov 23 '21

Oh definitely want to keep you safe

37

u/patsfacts Nov 23 '21

TWA Hotel at JFK sells day passes which include the gym, where they have like 25 peloton bikes. No idea the cost.

11

u/Stillworkinhard Nov 24 '21

$25 a day. Son has a long layover coming up. Edit: says for hotel and daytripper guests. Not sure what the second one is

20

u/joeroganfolks Nov 24 '21

Imagine going to jfk three day in a row to peloton during your vacation...

1

u/RedHawkRider Nov 24 '21

That gym looks awesome (actually, whole hotel looks awesome)!

29

u/S_Branner Nov 23 '21 edited Nov 23 '21

Rent a citi bike, head to prospect park, and use the peloton app. It'll cost you like 10 bucks for three rides. Bim bam boom. Adapt and overcome!

Edit: just read your other post about not wanting to ride in traffic. I feel you! Prospect park or central park are car free. Plan still works!

Edit edit: you can get 2 weeks of class pass for free and find a bike somewhere. Google class pass nyc.

4

u/SpacerCat Nov 24 '21

I posted the same thing before I saw your post. Great minds think alike!

And good call on the classpass!

2

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

Ohhhh this is a good call. Looking into it!

21

u/DrowsyPenguin Nov 23 '21

are they still booking walkthrough sessions in the showrooms? maybe you need to explore a 30 minute class to see if the bike+ is a worthwhile upgrade?

https://www.onepeloton.com/showrooms

18

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

Boom. Doing this on Friday! Thanks for the recommendation.

18

u/wmhampton Nov 23 '21

It's not exactly warm in NY in Nov, but the weather looks relatively nice this week - outdoor walks also count for the streak :)

4

u/tanr Nov 23 '21

Yes, I will definitely be doing lots of walking, but I'm trying to maintain my cycling streak specifically.

2

u/Still7Superbaby7 Nov 23 '21

Before I got the tread and even now post tread+, I will use a spin class but run instead. I have run the Hamilton run and also the Hamilton spin class. It’s doable!

1

u/tanr Nov 23 '21

oh yeah I mean if i was on a running streak I'd be totally into this. The streak that matters to me is actually getting on a bike :)

220

u/ClipIn Nov 23 '21 Vibing

This is hilarious. I’m approving it. If I get to witness one mindless thing in this crazy stressed out world, I hope it’s someone helping this Redditor sneak into a hotel to get in a 30min workout just to keep their streak alive.

OP if you pull this off, we’re gonna need a update!

PS Streaks are based on taking a class - any class - on any Peloton platform/app/hardware. A 5 min meditation on your phone will get you there.

36

u/RuckOver3 TacoBelloton035 Nov 23 '21

Came here to say the last point. I was away for a wedding in East Bum, NH or 3 days with no access to a bike. Ended up doing some walks, body weight strength, yoga, and stretching via the app to keep my streak alive.

22

u/tanr Nov 23 '21

Oh yeah I know, I still plan on doing my strength classes, but I specifically have goal of getting to 90 days of cycling for at least 30 mins a day, even if it's just low impact stuff.

34

u/jess_on_jeppy Nov 23 '21

Most hotels and gyms have bikes, they're just not Peloton brand. Put a class on your phone and ride away.

Some of us live like this all the time! :)

5

u/tanr Nov 23 '21

Yeah the issue I've been running into is that hotels don't have day passes for their gyms (you need to be staying with them). and the gyms that have peloton are pretty expensive--hence me looking for apartment access or something similar.

7

u/JackBauersGhost Nov 23 '21

Dude get a Citi Bike pass for the weekend. Get 30 quick minutes of sight seeing with the audio in your ear.

13

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

Oh man I wish I could. I actually got hit by a car and ended up with broken bones two years ago when I lived in NYC. I'm just a bit spooked to ride outside still especially with audio in my ears.

4

u/JackBauersGhost Nov 24 '21

Oh yeah never mind! Took me years to get back on a bike after getting hit.

7

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

Right? It's so sad--it used to be one of my favorite things to do in New York too. Peloton has been awesome for this reason.

-1

u/ChiefBossSosa Nov 24 '21

seems like you probably figured it out but it's pretty easy to sneak into a hotel gym "shoot can you swipe me, my gf / bf / wife / husband" has our key" works unless you look super sketch

5

u/kjb76 RidingRubia Nov 23 '21

I totally feel you on this. I have a 25 day bike streak (32 day overall streak) and I am away and have no access to a bike Tues-Sat and I am very sad. I’ve resigned myself to keeping the blue dots with outdoor walks and meditation.

2

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

Hey 25 days is a huge feat in itself! Congrats!

2

u/kjb76 RidingRubia Nov 24 '21

Thanks! For someone who has never worked out consistently in her adult life (I’m 45), it’s a big deal.

4

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

I'm in a similar-ish boat. I am not an athletic person at all and working out is not something I typically enjoy, but this streak has been so fulfilling and has felt so good that I just want to keep it going. Goes to show that the peloton system/community is something special.

2

u/lovelysiren bumfiddle Nov 24 '21

Good for you!!!

13

u/dubbledxu Nov 23 '21

The peoples mod! Let’s get OP their streak

12

u/thelittlemiss WorkItOutMissy Nov 23 '21

Now I’m invested. If you feel inclined, add me as a friend so I can anxiously check to make sure you found a bike to ride! LB: WorkItOutMissy

3

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

hahah yea! I'll add you before I get in the saddle tonight. Fingers crossed! Thanks for following me on this journey!

8

u/mathepanda Nov 23 '21

If you have ClassPass or can sign up for ClassPass (which is really easy to cancel compared to a gym and has a great free trial), they have gym time access to Crunch gyms for like 2-4 credits.

I haven’t been to every crunch in the city but the two I have been to had clip in bikes, but they weren’t pelotons. Hope that helps!

9

u/CandidRaspberry1975 Nov 23 '21

I’m not sure if this has changed with COVID & with the studio moving out of Chelsea, but the store on 23rd had a display bike and also a “warmup” bike by the juice bar. You might try to call them and see if they’d allow you to use one? Definitely not ideal but if you have your heart set on a Pelo bike for your streak, it’s worth a shot.

9

u/ttrockwood Nov 24 '21

As a new yorker you could: - citibike with peloton app, go in central park do the loop around the edge 2xs that’s about 45min should be nice this weekend rent a helmet for $5 from bike rental kiosk at CPW/central park south corner at time warner center subway stop - try booking peloton showroom visit to bike, but thanksgiving day you’re definitely outta luck

7

u/mandirocks FrankiesFurMom Nov 23 '21

Aww man, if I was going to be home this weekend I'd totally let you come hop on mine! I know you want a cycling streak--could you just get a day pass to a regular gym and use your phone? I know it won't track your metrics but I know a bunch of people who don't even have pelotons and do it for both bike and tread.

5

u/SpacerCat Nov 24 '21

You could run the app on your phone and get a Citibike and ride outside in Prospect Park?

14

u/Adept-Recognition531 Nov 24 '21

I’m in Jersey City so you’d have to take the PATH but I’m down to let a stranger use my Peloton.

6

u/metalmaxilla Nov 24 '21

This (in the peloton community and trustworthiness) is so heartwarming for me.

3

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

Aw this is so nice! Thanks for the offer. I think I got it figured out :) I love that people are being open to my crazy request. This community is great.

15

u/MarinCountyBlondie Nov 23 '21

New York Marriott @The Brooklyn Bridge, NU Hotel in Brooklyn, and Even Hotel in Brooklyn.

I am sure they'd let you use it if you paid a day fee to access their gym. If not, I'm sure they'd make an exception based on your explanation. 😃

6

u/tanr Nov 23 '21

I called every single one of those before posting and pleaded with them to grant me paid access, but they all said no. Very #nyc.

4

u/MarinCountyBlondie Nov 23 '21

Ugh. That's so frustrating. Are you in a hotel? Do you have access to a stationary bike? Know it's not the same but gotta keep the streak alive! Was just in NYC myself (midtown) and stayed at the 1 Hotel because it had a Peloton. 😂

3

u/tanr Nov 23 '21

No I'm staying with my sister. I looked at booking a stay at a hotel with access, but at this point its like $1000+ for 4 nights at hotels that have the bikes.

7

u/vinylemulator Nov 24 '21

Given the bike is only $1495, I say you bite the bullet and buy your sister an awesome Christmas present

2

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

Haha I’ve been trying to convince her to get one but her apartment is too small 😩

3

u/vinylemulator Nov 24 '21

Help her get a bigger apartment then? Come on, how much do you want this streak? 😀

3

u/metalmaxilla Nov 24 '21

I too have started using the Peloton website to guide what hotels I book at lol

8

u/kat_mom30 Nov 24 '21

So many people are being very critical on this. Props to you for sticking towards your personal goal! Regardless if you get a badge or not, knowing you accomplished it is enough of a reward.

6

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

Hey thanks! I think it's hard to express why such an arbitrary streak is so important over text online, but for all the negative comments, there are way more positive comments and awesome brainstorming and kind messages in my inbox. Appreciate the support <3

16

u/sbfaster Nov 23 '21

Honestly just pay the $240 and save the headache of coordinating with a stranger, them backing out, etc. It’s a lot for a “silly badge,” but if you can comfortably afford it it’s the easiest and more guaranteed way to make it happen. Good luck!

ETA if the price tag seems insane just to ride a peloton and keep a streak (which it is lol but I get it), just tell yourself you’re paying for an experience like a concert or something. Only you can determine what your streak is worth!

2

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

yeah this is likely what I will end up doing honestly. I just wanted to tap into the community and see if there's a less expensive alternative. Lots of great ideas in this thread though! Peloton community is coming in clutch with creative solutions. <3

7

u/lucky5150 Nov 23 '21

Go to the Peloton Store in mid town (near Hudson), and be like hey i'd like to try out a bike, thinking of buying, then hop on load up your UN and take a 30 min class!

6

u/and_the_winner_is Nov 23 '21

any fancy gyms have a peloton like the Williamsburg equinox perhaps? You could sign up for a free 3 day trial or something?

18

u/br0princess Nov 23 '21

I feel like there is no way Equinox has Peloton bikes. They own Soulcycle.

3

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

Yes! that was my first thought--equinox and chelsea piers (which I was a member of before I moved a few months ago). Equinox turns out is a competitor to peloton. And CP has them (where I fell in love with Peloton in the first place), but the price is steep.

5

u/Adept_Employee1844 Nov 23 '21

You might have luck if your sister posts on a local neighborhood Facebook group. Mine in Prospect Lefferts Gardens in Brooklyn is very helpful and I’d guess some people would be happy to help with a fun streak goal.

4

u/tanr Nov 24 '21 edited Nov 24 '21

Contemplating if the eye-roll I get from my sister will be worth this effort. 😂But yeah this is a good idea--I might ask her to help out if I don't get something figured out for tomorrow.

29

u/Comfortable-Party911 NEW MEMBER Nov 23 '21

How much would you ask to be paid for a stranger to come into your home and use your exercise bike / sweat all over it in the middle of a pandemic when everyone is spending time with family and at risk of spreading covid?

Is that $60 a day starting to sound a bit more reasonable?

17

u/GothicToast Nov 23 '21

Lol. I think their intent is to go into an exercise room within an apartment building that has Pelotons. They’d be out of their mind to expect someone would invite them into their personal living space and ride their Peloton.

37

u/themathkid Nov 23 '21 edited Nov 23 '21

They’d be out of their mind to expect someone would invite them into their personal living space and ride their Peloton.

They're going severely out of their way on a holiday weekend to keep an arbitrary gamification stat alive. They're already out of their mind.

8

u/GothicToast Nov 23 '21

Lolll. Touché.

-3

u/tanr Nov 23 '21

Yes, correct.

7

u/Mishapchap Nov 23 '21

Seriously OP, you’re being a little nuts. Sorry, but it’s just internet points? Even if you really just want a building gym, this request is a tad whack

11

u/tanr Nov 23 '21

Yeah I mean maybe. It's not really about internet points as much as it is something that I've been working hard at for the last almost 60 days. It's important to me.

2

u/jjthinx Nov 24 '21

Maybe, but one person’s whack is another person’s WAHOO! Me, I think it’s awesome to have a goal and OWN it. OP, you go for it!

0

u/tanr Nov 23 '21 edited Nov 23 '21

It is still sounding expensive.

I'm not asking to go into a living room, more so an apartment building that has a gym. And believe me, I am not interested in spreading covid. I am very aware of the risks and would not suggest that. In fact, I plan on wearing my mask while cycling indoors.

1

u/ConsiderationSuch846 Nov 24 '21

Meh. If I were in Brooklyn I’d allow it.

6

u/cheeseburghers Nov 23 '21

Have you looked into the local airport?

6

u/tanr Nov 24 '21 edited Nov 24 '21

Not sure why this is downvoted, but yes, I have! As someone mentioned, TWA has them (I've actually stayed there before and used them), the thing I need to figure out is if the commute or taxi going out there and back will be worth it or if I should just saddle up and pay the $60/day at the gym near where my sister lives.

7

u/Dora247 Nov 24 '21 edited Nov 24 '21

You could also negotiate with the gym: “hi I will be here for 4 days visiting family, and need to keep up with my training regimen (less than 1hr/day) and could you do $120 for those 4 days?”. They may say yes, they may say “how about $180 instead?” or they may say “sorry bud $240 it is” in which case the worst possible outcome is you pay what you’re planning to pay.

Many gyms have promotions, wiggle room, free passes for member guests etc, so they’re probably more than willing to negotiate for a 4-day temporary member! Especially one who HAS FAMILY nearby I.e. treat you right and your sister or her friends or their families in town are then more favorably inclined towards that gym who was so kind etc etc.

Edited to add: when calculating cost of heading to a “cheaper” gym, remember to value your time and opportunity cost (family experiences?) into the bargain! Only you can decide whether spending say $35 and 2hr travel (pulling numbers out of my ass here) is worth more than $60 and 20min travel daily.

2

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

Yeah I actually tried to negotiate with 2 of the hotels I called but they both had a hard no and cited corporate policies that said I’d need to be staying at the hotel. It kinda became clear that they’re not about it. But this is totally where my head was at when I started calling around.

1

u/cheeseburghers Nov 24 '21

Ah yeah that would be a far ride unless you’re traveling to your sisters by air, then I’d say use it on your travel days if that’s an option

2

u/turndownfortheclap Nov 23 '21

Just look up gyms with pelotons in the area and get a free trial??

2

u/metalmaxilla Nov 28 '21

u/tanr update? how'd it shake out for you?

2

u/tanr Nov 28 '21

I just crawled off the bike! I have one more day here in the city that I need to squeeze a ride into. I’ll post a more formal update once I get that ride secured!

5

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '21

[deleted]

3

u/ttrockwood Nov 24 '21

Nope they’re not filming live audiences

2

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

Exactly. Although it's definitely a dream of mine to go to a life class at some point when I'm in the city.

1

u/Owlex22 Nov 24 '21

This one might have been said but I hear the 1 Hotel in Brooklyn near the bridge got either the tread or bike. You could give them a call to confirm and ask about a day pass to use their gym. I’ve stayed there myself but before I was a Peloton fan, it’s a beautiful property if you do end up going!

1

u/tanr Nov 24 '21

They were one of the first places I called, but unfortunately, as it seems to be the case all around, most places don't sell passes to their gyms and reserve them for those who are actually staying with them.

1

u/ellenklutz Nov 26 '21

Just to be clear, we need an update when the weekend is over. Did you do it? How? I am now personally invested.

4

u/tanr Nov 26 '21

Thursday (thanksgiving) I woke up at 3:50am to squeeze in a ride before my 7am flight ✅

I am currently at the CP gym in the lounge area, post ride, cooling down. Ride 2 of the weekend complete ✅

Sat, Sun, and Mon still ahead! 🤞

1

u/ellenklutz Nov 30 '21

Inquiring minds want to know - how did you manage the other 3???

Sorry if I am pestering you, but for some reason I find this fascinating.

2

u/tanr Dec 01 '21

not at all! I ended up doing all the rides at Chelsea Piers in part due to a promotion they had for Friendsgiving and also due to the fact that it was super close/convenient and I didn't have to pay for each day (got 2 days free).
