That was me with my LG Ultrawide. Was sitting pretty with some savings and then the need just took me after I experienced ultrawide for the first time haha

24

u/MenryNosk Oct 21 '21

i will admit, the first time i saw my desktop on my ultrawide monitor, i was in awe... i started laughing 😅

7

u/guareber Oct 21 '21

I don't get the appeal - it's so inflexible! Two monitors has always felt more natural to me (but no shade for people for whom it clearly works)

9

u/MenryNosk Oct 21 '21

you can have an ultrawide with a second monitor, i still use my old 1080p 60hz one..

i have to say that i've seen ultrawides on display, but to actually sit in front of one is a totally different experience.

8

u/guareber Oct 21 '21

Bro, how much deskspace do you have? I can barely fit my 2nd monitor in vertical mode lol

3

You can do that with a 3080 and save money. The 3090 is made for rendering and stuff.

For only gaming you almost gain nothing with a 3090 except a much emptier wallet

23

u/EmiliaIsBestWaifu Oct 21 '21

Not when 4k textures start being 16 gb of vram

10

u/1Dustin86 Oct 21 '21

And by then in 3 years time there will be a 5080. Paying double the price on something so it's slightly better in 3 years is batshit crazy.

-12

u/BernieAnesPaz Oct 21 '21

At that point a still cheaper 4080 will run circles around it. We're still a long while until that becomes the norm and 4k gamers are still an extreme minority anyways according to Steam survey.

11

u/JmacTheGreat Oct 21 '21

a still cheaper 4080….

A WHAT

2

u/BernieAnesPaz Oct 21 '21

It was a joke that went over your head; by the time it becomes normal for games to need that much ram (i.e the vast majority of them, not just a few), we'll be on the next generation or more.

And 4k gamers are still an extreme minority. Buying a 3090 today is bad value unless you have a specific reason to use that extra ram today.

10

u/Oshova Oct 21 '21

As someone still rocking a GTX960, I can tell you that some people keep their GPUs for a long time. I can also tell you that buying the best one you can afford at the time is better value for money, as it will last longer. So yes, that 3090 is a better deal than a 3080 BECAUSE it will be as good as a 4080.

5

u/BernieAnesPaz Oct 21 '21

We're talking about 4k gaming, which is going to be increasingly demanding unless you're content with only playing older games at 4k. Secondly, it probably WON'T be as good as a 4080, because the 3090 performs almost exactly the same as a 3080 already and just has more ram. This has been discussed to death by a million people and the general census is that a 3090 is terrible value over a 3080, especially given the price differences.

You're basically paying more for a 3080 hoping to someday use that extra RAM, which you won't be doing in many games right now.

4

u/heyuwittheprettyface Oct 21 '21

it will be as good as a 4080

Lol wanna put money on that?

2

u/Oshova Oct 21 '21

I feel like it's a vague enough statement that I could argue it if money was on the line. Or a new graphics card.... Hey, buy me a 3090 and a 4080 (when they're out) and I'll give you an in-depth analysis of both and keep the worst one, you can keep the better one.

I mean, that sounds like a great deal for you. You get the better card! lol

u/Skettalor Oct 21 '21

Wow, that's still 1 monthly net salary for most people in the richest countries on earth.

I'd love to get one as well, but I feel like it would just hurt too much. That RX 580 still does perfectly fine, so if I think about it for a minute then it feels so heavy to spend this much for a few hours a week where it slightly outperforms my old GPU.

8

u/Agent_Dutchess 9700k, rtx 3090 oc, 32gb RAM Oct 21 '21 edited Oct 21 '21

Because I could pay for it cash and wanted the best hardware that would last me the longest,, and was sick of my 1060's growing obsoleteness. The 3090 also, oddly, had the LEAST markup of any of the cards. I figure the MSRP alienated enough buyers as is.

My logic is the same with all purchases. Buy right buy once. Buy the more expensive item, and make it last longer than the cheaper alternative.

In other words, if I get 4 years out of a 3090 instead of 3 years out of a 3080 (conjecture, idk how long these cards will actually last), even though I paid a bit more for it, the price is offset by the longer use time and increased performance.

63

u/GregDevStuff Oct 21 '21

Isn't financial stability is not about how much you can splurge on something, but more about stability of income with enough reserve or systems to absorb unforeseen situations. You can have financial stability, but at the same time unable to afford luxuries like this.

30

u/vildingen Oct 21 '21

Yeh. If you blow your reserve on RTX, you no longer have a reserve. Suddenly any unforseen expense risks ruining your finances for a good while.

5

u/Oshova Oct 21 '21

Last time I upgraded my PC, I did everything except the GPU. Definitely a bit OTT for what I actually needed, but it was a sensible decision financially at the time. I lost my job within 2 months, and spent the next 6 months unemployed.... Yeah, that decision suddenly became a bad decision financially.

3

u/ReasonableSail1363 Oct 21 '21

This is more or less true — and I think people don’t really know what they can actually afford.

If $2500 on a video card is going to hurt you, you definitely need to not be thinking about computer parts and focusing instead on financial security.

The cards are about 1.5k where I am so that equals 750k. I did ok in crypto so that account is def creeping up near a milli. That’s the thing though, a million dollars is waaaaay less than everyone thinks it is.

A milli isn’t enough to provide interest to live off, it’s not enough for a housing empire to pay your lifestyle etc, it’s not instant retirement. You are still a working pleb just like everyone else.

Mind you, you are a working pleb that isn’t stressed about emergency funds etc so that’s very nice... I can also buy the nicer aged $12 prosciutto occasionally instead of the slimy $6 stuff I used to buy… but that’s it. Nothing fundamentally day to day changes with a million dollars.

I mean technically there must be a threshold that can be crossed right? If it was a binary concept that is, which colloquially, like in the post, it often is discussed as. But in reality it's a spectrum so it's basically as you say.

u/TheRealKyaryPPamyu Oct 21 '21

I think it may have been hyperbole for the sake of a joke

Never understand shared bank account. My and my wife have separate account. All we share are costs - 50/50. For the rest no one complain, or if I buy €1200 music équipement, or if she buys €700 shoes. I work, she works that's why we're earning money to spend them.

u/heavenparadox 5950X | 3080ti | 64GB DDR4 4400 Oct 21 '21

Because we're a team. I don't earn "my" money, and she doesn't earn "her" money. We earn money together to achieve the same goal: getting us further ahead. I don't buy $1,200 worth of anything without consulting her first, because we have a set plan. Likewise with her. We're not roommates. We're married.

My wife and I don’t share an account. I would STILL check with her before I went out spending $1200. That’s an argument waiting to happen.

Ya he has a pretty loose casual definition of marriage. Guess it works for him but it seems like more of a live in girlfriend situation with a legal marriage certificate added in.

THANK YOU

I got a PC and I spoke with my wife why I want one. We both decided I could get one and I got exactly what I wanted.

But things work better for other people but when I make nearly double my wife that means I can have more fun? Be more burdened with paying for dinner?

Or just work as a team and not think about it.

2

u/GalacticRelic Oct 21 '21

Same all though I might do a low key click on a steam sale or two...

13

u/v1sper v1sper Oct 21 '21

Yeah never understood it either. The wife and I have each our own accounts where our paychecks go, with automatic transfers to a shared bills/expenses account which auto pays all the monthly stuff (fixed bills for the apartment, car, power, etc.), as well as to a fourth account which has a card each attached to it that we use for food and shared expenses. Whatever we are left with in our own accounts is for personal use, which is of no business to the other.

13

u/Oshova Oct 21 '21

Single shared account for bills and expenses is the way forward. I spend my money on useless shit, and she spends her money on useless shit. But as long as the bills are paid and food is on the table, we're both happy.

1

u/CugMuzzler Oct 21 '21

If you decide to have kids, I could see separate bank accounts being a pain. I didn’t actually buy a 3090, just thought the meme was funny. I’m going back to school right now so my wife is the sole breadwinner. I run all my purchases by her, just to make sure we have enough money in the bank.

10

u/anethma Shuntmod 3090FE,8700k@5.2 Oct 21 '21

Because it sounds like you guys aren’t really married. You’re supposed to be partners working towards common goals in life.

If one person is constantly blowing thousands of dollars without ever discussing things within the partnership they have formed they aren’t really partners.

You have a live in roommate that you sleep with it’s not quite the same.

3

u/Simcurious Oct 21 '21

You’re supposed to be partners

Says who? The marriage police? Kidding aside, you can have separate accounts and a shared one on which you contribute money for shared goals.

u/TheRealKyaryPPamyu Oct 21 '21

Do you think couples with shared accounts don't allow each other to spend money...? Genuinely confused at what you mean when you say you're earning money to spend it, as though a shared account would prevent that.

Otherwise, you say you split everything 50/50. That's...the entire point of a shared account but with less steps. It makes budgeting and paying bills easier.

2

u/ifoundyourtoad 3070 / Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core / A520M-A Pro Oct 21 '21

My wife and I have a shared bank account and I don’t mind it. I make significantly more than her and she wouldn’t be able to afford 50/50 fairly. I really don’t want understand the hate.

We just give each other an allowance on our credit cards and we do whatever we want. It’s made things a lot easier.

2

u/anethma Shuntmod 3090FE,8700k@5.2 Oct 21 '21

There is no hate, splitting costs 50/50 is a cold shitty way to do things. In a marriage you’re supposed to be a team. Not some equitable cost splitting arrangement where you happen to have sex.

Simple, if you are both responsible adults and not children it is easy. I make over double the income of my wife, just because I have a higher paying job I should have nicer things than her? If we did the 50-50 split she would be driving around in an old crappy car with our son while I drive my new luxury vehicle seems kind of fucked up if you ask me.

u/CheezeyCheeze GTX Titan X/i7-6700K/16gb DDR4 Oct 21 '21

Makes budgeting easier. No need to transfer from account to account. Some people want to keep track of spending. My Grandmother was an accountant so she just loves the numbers. My Grandpa bought whatever he wanted because they made enough money at the time but she always had enough pulled aside for the bills.

Some people need that monitoring of their spending habits. Smokers for example if they are trying to quit. Alcoholics similar idea.

IIRC in America there are fees if you don't have a minimum balance of $1,000. Those living check to check can avoid the fees by having 1 account.

Finally if one of you becomes incapacitated, it could be harder to access that money that you have saved without a power of attorney. So car wreck and they had some of the next months bill money.

u/AdScary1757 Oct 21 '21

3090 is a better deal because the mark up is less than a 3080 right now. If you're paying 2000 for a 700 dollar gpu why not pay 2100 for a 1000 dollar gpu and not be borked at 4k when using far cry 6's HD texture pack. You can always under volt it and make run cooler

It's all relative. It entirely depends on how much you earn as to whether spending a couple of grand on a one off purchase is a big deal or not.

I do - we don't share finances. I also mine with my 3090 to help pay for itself so it's free gaming upgrade.

5

u/AmenTensen Oct 21 '21

It's my money, I earn it. Why should my partner tell me how and when I spend it?

1

u/minegen88 Oct 21 '21

Because it's his money?

My gf and i don't share finances, we split the bills, put some money on a savings account and that's it. Then what she does with the rest of her money i couldn't care less about....

I still don't understand why everyone that buy a expensive GPU doesn't mine with it while they're not gaming. I mean, everyone says it's really expensive. Bro, the best way to make it cheaper as the time passes it's to mine with it. Maybe in one year instead of $1499 it has cost you $399. Wouldn't you prefer to have it for $399?

1

u/Jloureiro55 i7-6800k , Asus 2080 Super , 32GB Vengeance 3000Mhz Oct 21 '21

Not everyone lives on a place where they can let the gpu consume as much power as it wants.

1

u/juanly_xx Oct 21 '21 edited Oct 21 '21

A 3090 consumes 250W mining. If you let it go for 12h per day, you'll end up consuming 90kWh per month, (assuming it costs you $0.1, it´s 9 dollars per month in electricity) and it will make around $130 in revenue... Still doesn't understand why people doesn't mine. I bought my 3080 just for gaming, but ended up with it for free, it literally cost me a negative number.

Wives are always pissed, man. It’s their job. Just get the card and enjoy a few hours of your life.

10

u/Oshova Oct 21 '21

If this is your outlook on life and/or marriage, then I feel sorry for you.

2

u/theAnalepticAlzabo Oct 21 '21

Sorry. Don’t mean to be a downer. I’m an old fart, who never married myself.

In my experience a lot of wives resent any pass time that takes the husbands time/money away from more ‘useful’ tasks.

2

u/VolksWoWgens Oct 21 '21

If you're not married, I wonder why. If you are then you need a divorce my guy.
