God I love the 10 series founders design. It’s not great for cooking but it looks so damn good…

Edit: cooling, lol

SLI time for those 2 cards, get that extra 1 or 2 fps

41

u/Shivalah Ryzen 7 3700X, 32gb@3200mhz, RX6800 Oct 21 '21

God damn all those broken promises of DirectX 12… in the end Battlefield 1 was running better in Solo mode compared to 2x980ti.

10

u/el_f3n1x187 R5 5600x |GTX 970|16gb HyperX Beast Oct 21 '21

same with the explicit multi GPU from vulkan and DX12 :(

12

u/InVizO Oct 20 '21

Not enough VRAM sadly.... a single one of those would probably be within 5% of the fps u get from using SLI

OP should sell one on eBay so he can upgrade easily next generation with a shortage or not.

2

u/sbfreund Desktop Oct 21 '21

Or sell both and get enough to buy a 3000 dollar pc...

-20

u/raymartin27 Oct 21 '21

Yeah selling them for a reasonable price is not a bad idea if you literally have 2 of the same card. 150 sounds about decent.

11

u/KaBurns Oct 21 '21

I’m betting you could get way more than $150

-21

u/raymartin27 Oct 21 '21

Well of course you can, but would that be an ethical thing to do? Hell no. You are becoming part of the problem by promoting taking advantage of people in this horrible market. No better than scalpers.

12

u/USBtroika Oct 21 '21

You propose that he sells the cards he has below market price and then does not have enough money to buy a replacement card at market price. How isn’t that not shooting yourself in the foot?

-19

u/raymartin27 Oct 21 '21

This exact mentality is why chip market is so fucked right now.

11

u/USBtroika Oct 21 '21

No, the chip market is the way it is because more chips are needed than produced. Selling two and only buying one already helps that situation. Selling below market price and buying at is just gifting a random person a few hundred bucks. It changes nothing expect the OPs account balance.

10

u/DressDiligent2912 Oct 21 '21

No sorry. You're just wrong.

-6

u/raymartin27 Oct 21 '21

Lol, sure bud.

5

u/-RED4CTED- PC Master Race Oct 21 '21

you may have been correct at the beginning of the 30 series, but there is this little concept called supply and demand which is an integral part of all capitalism. maybe look it up some time.

2

u/s_randomaccount_ Laptop Oct 21 '21

Whats SLI

27

u/BluehibiscusEmpire Oct 21 '21

We have finally reached that point in the cycle :)

SLI was a means to get two cards to run together, allowing for more more performance than just a single card. Was good in theory, but in practice you couldn’t get the performance of both cards - gains varied between a 30-70 percent. Plus it was glitchy and expensive. Ultimately as the cards got better, and more expensive, it’s less needed.

Mostly dead now except for the 3090 which still supports it and some professional series cards.

Ps. It’s not called sli also anymore (as that’s linked to a speed standard), and we have moved on from that speed.

3

u/HiveMynd148 PC Master Race Oct 21 '21

NVlink on those Quadro cards is pretty dope tho, the bridges are so high speed they effectively Pool their VRam together which is awesome for someone doing GPU intensive work, idk how it'll work out in games tho

3

u/ClintE1956 Oct 21 '21

Even when SLI and Crossfire were relevant, it was hit or miss for decent game support. DirectX multi GPU support was, AFAIK, only ever promised.

Way back when, I used to run two ATI HD 2900 XT cards in Crossfire with very mixed results depending on the game, because it was all up to the game developers since Microsoft never came through with CF (or SLI) DirectX support.

Cheers!

2

u/-RED4CTED- PC Master Race Oct 21 '21

heh, forgot crossfire was what amd called it. now i only think of it as the long range transmitter for fpv. xD

3

u/s_randomaccount_ Laptop Oct 21 '21

Thanks for the explanation dude!

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '21

I seen some awesome gains way back in the day with SLI, playing F.E.A.R at 1024x768 on 2x 7600gt's at over 300 fps on a 60hz monitor😂

1

u/crewchiefguy Oct 21 '21

It to mention you only got a boost if the game you were running actually supported. Which a vast majority didn’t even support so it was pretty useless.

3

u/KFC_Junior i5 4590, 1050ti, 1600mhz hyperx fury ddr3 Oct 21 '21

its an apparently discontinued standard to connrct 2 cards together in a bridge sometimes giving some more fps

1

u/s_randomaccount_ Laptop Oct 21 '21

Thanks, i looked it up and found out aswell. Didnt know that was possible. But why is it discontinued though

5

u/KFC_Junior i5 4590, 1050ti, 1600mhz hyperx fury ddr3 Oct 21 '21

not enough use and didnt give thst much of a boost in games these days

2

u/s_randomaccount_ Laptop Oct 21 '21

I see, thanks for the info btw!

1

u/This_not-my_name Oct 21 '21

people can barely afford one GPU

1

u/ZekkPacus R5 5600x/RTX 3070 Ti Oct 21 '21

Even at its heyday it was never that good and very rarely something I recommended.

You pay 200% price for 200% power usage and heat generation to get 130-170% performance max, plus having to deal with microstuttering and other quirks.

1

u/TschackiQuacki 5800X 6900XT Oct 21 '21

Because people could buy a cheap second hand used card to get a nice performance boost instead of buying a brand new GPU like the manufacturers want you to.

How’s it working for you? 1080p? 1440?

25

u/K4zu70 Ryzen 7 2700x | MSI GTX 1070 8GB | 16 GB RAM | B450 TOMAHAWK Oct 20 '21

1440p, not great. I can't run the latest games anymore, and I struggle to hit 30 in a lot of graphically intensive games. It pains me emotionally to have to set my graphics settings to medium or low ),:

8

u/mattadeth Oct 20 '21

I just recently out my 1060 to rest. It did me well for many years.

3

u/AC2BHAPPY Oct 21 '21

Is it still functional? I'd be interested in buying it

3

u/mattadeth Oct 21 '21

I’m using it in a second build that my gf uses. She likes to play non-competitive games like the sims and it’s perfect for her. Otherwise I’d hook a pcmr homie up.

4

u/angel_eyes619 PC Master Race Oct 21 '21

Damn bro... 2070 Super and I dare not move to 1440p, I'm at 1080p (Sure I can run 1440p 60fps, but I want higher than 60fps).. Best move down to 1080p with that card.

4

u/JuMpStaRtBoY Ryzen 5 3600-Gtx 650ti-8gb ram-msi B450MProM-2Max Oct 21 '21

2

u/Gamerhcp R5 3600X / RX 6700 XT / 2TB WD Blue NVME / 32GB 3200mhz CL16 Oct 22 '21

Except most modern games have very little differences in image quality between medium, high and very high/ultra.

For example, I have a 6700xt and out of curiosity I tried shadow of the tomb raider at medium 1440p, took a lot of screenshots then compared to the maximum quality screenshots - they looked about the same.

There are differences of course but it's not as bad as it was say, 10 years ago (2011/12)

3

u/Ghozer i7-7700k / 16GB TridentZ 3200 / GTX1070 Oct 21 '21

You have some issues then my friend..

i'm running a 1070 and have NO problem playing things in 1440p on high or better!

2

u/InVizO Oct 20 '21

This 100% 1440p requires more VRAM, usually 8GB or more and no amount of horsepower will circumvent that

3

u/K4zu70 Ryzen 7 2700x | MSI GTX 1070 8GB | 16 GB RAM | B450 TOMAHAWK Oct 21 '21

I have 8GB VRAM :pepehands:

1

u/InVizO Oct 21 '21

Well with 8gb u can see some benefit using both then. But certainly not double the fps or even +50%

If a game actually can use all 8gb then it's a huge performance boost to have 10-12gb, never put your vram or system ram above 80% usage, #1 cause of frame stutters

1

u/GonzaloNC Oct 21 '21

Same here, I should have gotten my 1440p monitor a few years later...

1

u/ferikehun PC Master Race Oct 21 '21

I just upgraded to a 1070 from a 960 on a 1440p monitor bruh.

Yeah I cant play cyberpunk at 60 fps but 50 is still better than not playing it.

1

u/sorryimadeanalt 5600x, 1660ti, 16gb 3200mhz Oct 21 '21

my 1660ti is basically a 1070 in terms of speed and I can play most games at 1440p excluding new releases and rdr2

1

u/Mydogatemyexcuse Oct 25 '21

What games are you running? I mostly only play one game from late 2020 but it runs at 60fps max settings @1440p on my 1060. And it could probably go higher but the physics is tied to the framerate so it's literally has to run at 60fps. Most other games get similar performance for me like No Man's Sky (standard settings), rocket league, and borderlands 3 (medium settings, can't record framerate though for some reason)

2

u/screwyourusername1 Oct 21 '21

I still rock a 1070 FE. Works perfectly fine on 1080p. Good card, pretty loud though

1

u/Bytepond R9 3900X | 32GB 3600mhz | RTX 3070 TI FTW3 Oct 21 '21

I'd seriously consider buying one off of you if you were selling since SLI is dead.

3

u/raymartin27 Oct 21 '21

Ryzen 1600 and gtx 1070 daily driver here, can someone confirm if I will see any noticeable difference in fps if I switch from 1600 to 5600x. I don't really plan to upgrade my 1070 rin this market. I mainly play Valorant, CS and warzone.

2

u/fifapotato88 Oct 21 '21

You should in CSGO. CS is heavy on the CPU for frames.

I went from a Ryzen 2600x to a 3900x. Went from 180-220 FPS to 300-400 when I swapped CPUS. For reference, my GPU is a 1060 6 GB.

1

u/raymartin27 Oct 21 '21

Yes, thank you kind stranger, I was worried if my 1070 would be too much of a bottleneck to get any meaningful gains.

1

u/fifapotato88 Oct 21 '21

It might bottleneck the other two games you listed since they are probably more heavy on the GPU side of things, but at least for CS you’ll see improvements.

1

u/raymartin27 Oct 21 '21

This is what concerns me, I'm more of a Valorant player nowadays, nd have just 144hz 1080p monitor, so I'm not really sure if just for CS the swap will be justified. But i am going for a lot bigger jump than you(1600 to 5600x), so that might have different results.

1

u/guugghkoyrffghjutdgg Oct 21 '21

Valorant is also a cpu intensive game like cs so it should have the same improvements as cs with upgrading processor.

2

If you can take them home why are you hiding your face? Did you hide them inside your bag?

No seriously damn lucky! I'm looking at paying £250 - £300 for an old RX 570 or 580 for my son's 13th birthday present as he's asked for PC parts because he's building his 1st PC.

Its been roughly 12 years since I built my last PC and God I was surprised at how insane the prices for cards are now, back then I paid about £400 for a brand new bang up to date Gigabyte HD6870 in today's market I'd be paying £2000 for the same card.

2

u/sensasianone Oct 21 '21

Are you in the States? I have a rx580 4gb

2

u/channex81 Oct 21 '21

Unfortunately not I'm in the UK where prices for everything are crazy as it is due to Brexit and us not being able to get supplies over from Europe, USA and China. What's the going rate in the US for an RX580? Just for comparison.
