It’s crazy that the main console manufacturers are bringing their games to PC, Valve is putting effort into making Linux a viable platform and Windows is falling short. What kind of era are we in?

Now if we started seeing Mario hopping into PC. Then we’d really be in a crazy timeline for gaming. But just seeing Sony IPs is already mind blowing!

Maybe developers just want people playing their games, regardless of platform.

u/HeywoodJaBlessMe HTPC Oct 20 '21

Sony already told their investors to expect this last year. ROI on 9-figure games is not fast enough on console alone so PC is being added to the mix to increase profit margins.

If only we weren't getting stiffed over by shortages we could actually play these games with modern hardware

26

u/Xd_FlamingScar Desktop Oct 20 '21

I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing PS5 exclusives aswell, as with the shortages Sony isn't making as much as they could from them

Releasing them on pc would fix that

22

u/brokenbentou R7 3800X, 32GB, RTX3070 Oct 21 '21

They're already doing this, PS5 games get like a year of console exclusivity before Sony goes to double dip in the PC market, which I'm completely fine with.

8

u/dramatic-ad-5033 Oct 21 '21

A few years of console exclusivity, and then porr to pc for full price and watch the money roll in

1

u/aryvd_0103 Oct 21 '21

They said they will be releasing games that have no retail activity after they have been out for a while. Plus this was the best timing as anyone who plays gow now , may likely gravitate towards a ps5 for gow Ragnarok

Allow me to introduce you to my friends CEMU and YUZU! They are great and you don’t have to wait for a greedy company to bring the games to PC!

NESticle

NESticle is a Nintendo Entertainment System emulator, which was written by Icer Addis of Bloodlust Software. Released on April 3, 1997, the widely popular program originally ran under MS-DOS and Windows 95. It was the first freeware NES emulator, and became commonly considered the NES emulator of choice for the 1990s. Initially offering few features and only supporting a handful of games, development proceeded rapidly and to expand usability such that NESticle is today credited with introducing the concept of recordable playthrough for emulation, as well as providing the capacity for users to create their own graphical hacks via an integrated graphics editor.

I mean the og for modern games lol, but yeah nes and snes games are great too

u/JDawwgy 3700x 2080ti Oct 21 '21

It's honestly crazy that they don't release more games for steam, especially after everyone who was going to play the game on their console already has. Tons of PC players don't bother with consoles regardless of exclusives so there would be tons of people exited to buy their games

2

u/Impossible-Finding31 Oct 21 '21

and Windows is falling short

wdym

1

u/ffsesteventechno Oct 21 '21

Windows 11 performance issues, even MORE inconsistencies, choosing defaults is a major pain. Windows feels Stagnant and messy while GNU/Linux looks like it’s starting to move forward.

2

u/Impossible-Finding31 Oct 21 '21

I mean W11 just came out. I’m not exactly surprised that it isn’t in amazing shape right out of the gate. Like all new OSes, you should probably wait 6-12 months before jumping in unless you just really want to have your hands on the newest thing.

1

u/ffsesteventechno Oct 21 '21

True, but they’re a multi billion dollar corporation. They can easily afford to test on a wide range of hardware to release a quality product. They’ve released quality in the past, windows XP and 7 were excellent out the gate AND til the end., NOT half assed like we have today. I’m not necessarily bashing Windows, but just I’m disappointed anymore is all.

2

u/Impossible-Finding31 Oct 21 '21

windows XP and 7 were excellent out the gate

I don’t really remember it that way, at least for XP. From memory, it wasn’t until the 1st service pack came out that things were in a good place across the board.

But yeah, I wish things were perfect day 1, but I think that’s the nature of software development today. Releasing the minimum viable product as quickly as possible then iterating on it later seems to be the way things are done for the most part nowadays.

1

u/ffsesteventechno Oct 21 '21

Yeah, that’s how it is today. Release beta and patch it over time. EA style.

I wonder if Sony will continue this trend of porting exclusives to PC after 3 years after Horizon and now GoW

9

u/ConcreteSnake Ryzen 3600 | RTX 2070 Oct 21 '21

I believe they will. They’ve already said they are more interested in getting games on PC. I feel like they will be exclusive for 1-2 years and then come to PC for additional sales and people like me that will rebuy it on PC

1

u/Captain_Saki Oct 21 '21

Don't forget the Uncharted collection

1

u/Away_Organization471 Oct 21 '21

It’ll depend on the sales I’d guess. If God of War breaks new records on pc then they’ll probably trickle release their exclusives throughout the year.

1

u/Obosratsya Oct 21 '21

Some games will be 2-3 years, but very few. A lot will be 6-12 months on PS5 then to PC and a huge chunk will be either simulteously or within a month or 2.

Console sales dry up after about 2 months, so squeezing ps5 owners the first 2 months and then releasing on PC makes the most money and the game can have one marketing budget instead of marketing it twice with a bigger time gap. Next step for Sony will be its own store, at which point most games will be same time - 2 month delay. Sony just recently dipped their toes and now Uncharted and God of War are on their way. By the looks of it Sony is all in on PC and sees it as a huge part of their growth strategy.

9

u/notflyingdutchman1 Oct 20 '21

It's not like gow will sell millions more on ps4, so will probably continue for future games.

7

u/danbert2000 4690k@4.1GHz | MSI GTX 1080 | 16GB DDR3 2400MHz Oct 21 '21

Once they switched to the PC architecture, with x86 and similar RAM configurations, I think this was inevitable. There's just too much money laying on the floor if you don't just port it. Especially with new game releases taking so many years at this point for AAA games, they can't just pass on double profits. The timed exclusives will likely stay for Sony but even if it's a year or more I'll wait.

6

u/captmotorcycle TOWER 900 3900X, Zotac Trinity 3090, 64Gb Ram Oct 21 '21

Legit no reason for either company not to do so. They never profit from console hardware, the games already are made on a PC platform, their peripherals natively in Windows, and less overhead as very few PC games get physical releases. Literally free money for the taking.

19

I’d argue that for a single player game it’s still worth at least most of the price. Really great game.

Nah, Sonys not dumb

They know that PC and console are 2 sepreate markets

They are selling out of PS5s, they know they have already locked down console and that they already will sell it there

Branching to pc is a way for them to make even more from their games

1

u/Vardoot Oct 21 '21

Oh my god I cannot stress how great god of war is. Y'all are in for a treat.

1

u/dslamngu Oct 21 '21

This is great because an epic work like GOW4 should be enjoyed forever. The best way to allow this is to make a PC port. And people will pay for it. One misconception I’m seeing is that Sony is disincentivized to sell this on PS5 because it loses money on each console sold. It loses initially, but each Playstation generation eventually makes profit on console hardware. The PS5 was profitable as of Aug 4th.

The fact that Nintendo Switch has a lot of exclusives is why I still insist on buying a Nintendo console, however
