Does anyone else wish we got a high quality revival of the Army Men series?

Fuck yes. Army Men, Army Men: Air Attack, Army Men: RTS, Sarge's Heroes 1 & 2, Sarge's war. Fuck me up. That'd be some high quality nostalgia right there.

u/SnooCheesecakes6590 Dec 07 '21

You literally typed out my childhood

I loved air attack personally

Edit: shit you remember Omega solider?

27

u/nerdmanjones Dec 07 '21

I played the hell out of Air Attack 2 back in the day. Seriously, you wouldn't expect a game about toy helicopters to be that good.

23

u/Rednartso Dec 07 '21

Dude, picking up crayons and shit to make soldiers? Hell yeah, all day.

13

u/Shinny1337 Dec 07 '21

I was always so sad that the further you got the less allies you had. I would try to make the biggest army I could in the beginning levels. Just spend hours watching them run around

9

u/boondoxDMdevil Dec 07 '21

Wasn't that the arcade style top down shooter on the PS2?

10

u/Abyssal_Guard Dec 07 '21

I remember on air attack stage where you'd free the bugs What they say stuck in my head forever.

WE'RE FREEEEE!!!!

6

u/SnooCheesecakes6590 Dec 07 '21

Hahahahahah I had to look it up! WEREEEE FREEEE honestly pure memories I found a video here WERE FREE

Also, Army Men 3D on Ps1. I remember it's clumsy movement and shooting mechanic, but man I had a blast playing it!

2

u/sweenzs Dec 07 '21

Same. I went and watched a video of the first level and its pretty rough haha. But I loved it.

19

u/DrNick2012 Dec 07 '21

Also Army Men: Land Sea Air

6

u/SinomodStudios Joystick Dec 07 '21

Glad I'm not the only one who loved that title. I remember playing Capture the Flag against my brother for countless hours.

2

u/SorroWulf Dec 07 '21

Came here to say this

17

u/JediMasterOllie Xbox Dec 07 '21

Are we going to talk about how all those games were released in a 4 year span and the company running it didn't fuck it all up?

9

u/AbortionSurvivor777 Dec 07 '21

Wasn't it made by 3DO? The same company behind the Battle Tanks series. I believe they spent all of their money to develop a console which failed spectacularly and they went bankrupt.

7

u/NotBearhound Dec 07 '21

BATTLETANKS

*gnarly guitars"

2

u/BearForceDos Dec 08 '21

Battletanx was awesome.

Sarge's heroes, battletanx, and goldeneye we're basically my childhood on N64.

2

u/the5pacepope Dec 07 '21

The console was made long before the Army Men games

13

u/peanutdakidnappa Dec 07 '21

Man just reading sarge’s heroes brings back memories

9

u/Jazzanthipus Dec 07 '21

Army Men: Toys in Space for me

8

u/TheCasseroleKid Dec 07 '21

Yes, they were surprisingly fun games. I had it on N64.

3

u/Heliwomper Dec 07 '21

wasn't there one with aliens in it? i vaguely remember playing something like that

7

u/assertivelyconfused Dec 07 '21

Yes. Army Men 2 on PC was the best IMO and then Army Men: Toys in Space was allegedly a slightly worse version of Army Men 2 but with aliens.

Haven’t played the latter yet but it’s on my gog wishlist. Regularly on sale for $1.79

Army Men: Green Rogue

2

u/hatwobbleTayne Dec 07 '21

Hell yeah green rogue was fun!

2

u/Thebambooguy Dec 07 '21

Rising Storm 2 Vietnam has a game mode where both teams spawn as plastic army men and it goes one further by having levels that fit the aesthetic, such as a living room full with toys during Christmas, a outdoor pool party, a backyard ect, it was really nostalgic to play.

1

u/aukir Dec 07 '21

I'm thinking a new game similar to xcom. Turn based army man tower/base defense.

Insane nostalgia of imagining the flamethrower melting opponents in split screen multiplayer

42

u/khronos127 Dec 07 '21

My gosh I miss that. We rented that at blockbuster like 5 times.

32

u/icebreaker90 Dec 07 '21

renting games at blockbuster on a friday night was always the highlight of the week if not the month. Those were some good times.

7

u/khronos127 Dec 07 '21

Yeah definitely. So much 007…. Good times.

2

u/sniffinberries34 Dec 07 '21

The aiming on 007 suuuuucked

Truly nothing better than going to Blockbuster after school on a Friday with my two best friends. We'd rent a Playstation before we owned one, rent games like Resident Evil, Project Overkill, Puzzle Fighter Turbo. Wonderful times.

A new one could be really awesome, I loved those levels.

76

u/Spunge88 Dec 07 '21

Rising Storm 2 had a Green Army Men update, it's currently £6 on Steam for both the base game and DLC if you want something

12

u/assertivelyconfused Dec 07 '21

Dang I loved Rising Storm 1. I didn’t realize the Maneater sale notice I got in my email was actually a Tripwire sale. Had been waiting for Rising Storm 2 to drop below $10 for years

12

u/JamesEtc Boardgames Dec 07 '21

Still hold ups. Wish the Green Army thing was more popular

only time i played that game was during that update and had a blast. is it still playable on its own playlist or did they wipe it?

It still is on there! Playlist for the mode is usually dead most the year but as of last night there were lobbies that were almost full for the Christmas map!

Those games were really fun back in the day. Would love to see a revival

116

u/IndianaGroans Dec 07 '21

There is "The mean greens- plastic warfare" but it isn't like old army men games.

17

u/TbaggingSince1990 Dec 07 '21

Came here to say this, there is also a game called HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed.. Not sure how it is, never played it but it does have Army Men figurines in it so.. there's that lol

10

u/workingsoapbox Dec 07 '21

HYPERCHARGE: Unboxed is ok, but don't expect an Army Men experience. It is really just a tower defense/fps game.

3

u/DeltaType Dec 07 '21

I was also about to drop the info on this! I bought it super cheap on steam a few years ago but never ended up playing it, might do now its in my mind again!

3

u/IndianaGroans Dec 07 '21

It's fun but your general fps shooter. Has bots iirc so even if games dont have people you can still shoot at those dirty stinking tans!

u/IndianaGroans Dec 07 '21

I'll have to try it. Reminds me of that movie with the toys that were fighting.

Mean greens was a huge let down. Was like $25 or something and got a couple friends to all buy it and it was basically the quality of a demo.

2

u/JuanOnlyJuan Dec 07 '21

I sometimes download it around Christmas for the Christmas tree train level

3

u/IndianaGroans Dec 07 '21

I got it for hella cheap so that didnt bother me. I wonder if any updates have been done..

2

u/Dreadlordstu Dec 07 '21

Mean greens. Great game! You can still find matches but it needs more population. Try it out people. Light hearted, classic death match/other modes fun with great maps that are thematically perfect.

2

u/IndianaGroans Dec 07 '21

I had fun when I played last! Which may have been like 3 years ago.

Was this made by 3DO?

11

u/assertivelyconfused Dec 07 '21

Most of the series was. Army Men (PC) and Army Men 2 (PC) were 3DO. The PS installments confuse me because some seemed to have the same name but were entirely different games. Could be wrong.

15

u/NeedlesslyAggressive Dec 07 '21

The PS games were 3DO. Distinctly remember some guys' deep voice saying "3 D O" every time at startup.

7

u/CreditUnionBoi Dec 07 '21

DA, Da, Da... 3DO!

→ More replies

3

u/nathanb065 Dec 07 '21

Honestly, Army Men 2 was one of the funnest games I ever played. Top down semi-strategy with what I remember to be a pretty good story and atmosphere. I'm pretty sure that's where my love for RTS games like AoE came from.

3

u/assertivelyconfused Dec 07 '21

Yeah, the story was awesome. Appropriately haunting at times, as a kid some of the stuff freaked me out in the late game and made me feel better about fighting them.

Then the multiplayer was a world of its own. It was like every thing you could imagine an epic Army Man fight to be and more (because I wasn’t out melting my dudes with aerosol or magnifying glasses) except you didn’t have to clean up afterwords.

I never even got mad when I lost because the winning/losing was so creative (although maybe it just wasn’t as cutthroat as games these days). The only exception to that is that I faced one player who knew the bullet and RPG dynamics very well. He knew how to duck and roll to evade auto attacks from you and your dudes. He slayed me. Maybe he was cheating, but I’m not sure. I think he would have done something more obvious or fun than using his rifle - infinite air strikes would be what I’d do probably

2

u/icebreaker90 Dec 07 '21

glad to know I wasnt the only one who was unsettled by the zombie army men and when they strapped m80s to the backs of POWs. That stuff actually stopped my from beating the game.

→ More replies

2

u/assertivelyconfused Dec 07 '21

Also, pretty sure it’s in my top 5 all time, too. Other than the quasi-horror elements in the story, it was one of the more lighthearted and wholesome and fun games I’ve ever played.

Oh and blowing up army men in lush green fields and hearing them scream once you get the rocket launcher from the guy in the rocking chair on the porch in the second level while Edvard Grieg’s Morning Mood is playing in the background was one of the most amazing and memorable juxtapositions I’ve ever experienced. I love that. I think I vividly remember my first play though of that level, probably at age 9 or 10 (not sure if the memory was my second time playing or not). Then you get the PT boat right after and that was so fucking cool. And the Vulcan fun hidden in the waterfall.

Oh, and in the final levels having a whole horde of dudes. I made sure to keep every follower alive in all my levels and I truly had a small army following me around in the end. So fun.

Ps1 man. Way back. I remember playing split screen with my brother 😂

6

My brother and I did also on PS1. I actually still have this and the first Air Attack. I passed up on air attack 2 a few weeks ago though.

10

u/CptNegro1stofhisname Dec 07 '21

To. This. Day!!!

8

u/RedDemon101 Dec 07 '21

I just bought the whole set on Steam. Playing through RTS in particular brings such nostalgia. I'd kill for a modern day reboot of the series.

2

u/Luciano3601 Dec 07 '21

I got RTS on steam awhile back because it was one of my favorite games, but for some reason my computer can't play it and I never figured out why

Sarge's War really hit different, especially being one of the last (the last?) games they made. Everyone you grew to love over time just gone. Made my 10 year old brain really feel for Sarge.

5

u/CreditUnionBoi Dec 07 '21

It was the last game 3DO made. Series took a dark turn with that game for sure with all the hero's dying at the start.

3

4

u/cali1013 Dec 07 '21

Ah yeah i missed killing those Tan soldiers

10

u/LEMO2000 Dec 07 '21

Army men RTS was the shit. Bought it on steam about a year ago, it still is.

8

u/Rogaar Dec 07 '21

Try out Commando's. Also an older series but just as good.

3

u/vanguard117 Dec 07 '21

Is commandos the game where you have to sneak around a German outpost with different characters and like plant bombs and stuff?

→ More replies

1

u/stealmyrecords Dec 07 '21

This is the game that Army Men actually reminds me of most. Both great, but I feel like I have more enjoyable memories of Commandos. Might have to dig that one up somehow.

1

u/DnA_Singularity Dec 07 '21

A lot harder too, if I recall correctly.

3

u/KillaPam Dec 07 '21

Loved Army RTS!

I vaguel remember playing something like that

3

u/CelinCanez Dec 08 '21

I remember playing Captures the Flag against my brother for countless hours.

7

u/Veighnerg Dec 07 '21

Given the state of fps games at the moment it would end up developed and/or published by either Ubisoft, EA, or Epic. If Ubi did it you would have maps where you gotta climb some tower shaped object to discover more map. If EA did it the game would have hit registration and bloom problems while lacking features such as green army men while also allowing each army man to carry the rocket launcher dressed as Santa. Finally if Epic did it you may as well just be playing Fortnite with green army men skins.

My point is I don't have faith in any developer/publisher to do it correctly.

6

u/McSuede Dec 07 '21

Give it to a smaller company like Housemarque or the team that made Helldivers.

My Dad has always disliked gaming but even he played the shit outta Army Men games.

Pretty sure he ended up beating most of them for me.

2

u/SamPNW Dec 07 '21

Hell yes! These games kicked ass!

2

u/Dirty__Dee Dec 07 '21

According to Wikipedia Crave Entertainment purchased the Army Men brand after 3DO went bankrupt. But Crave Entertainment also went bankrupt in 2012. Seems like it will be difficult for a remake.

2

u/702PoGoHunter Dec 07 '21

What I don't get is these games ran on 1/10 the hardware we have in our phones now. Why don't we have games like this for them? Everything is massive multiplayer & ad spammed. I'd pay $20 for good games for my phone that I actually owned like this!

2

u/EclipseNine Dec 07 '21

The army men series pumped out about 20 games in 5 years, including one of the crown jewels of terrible games, Portal Runner. Call of Duty wishes they couldn't shovel crap out to market at the pace they used to make these army men games.

Gritty modern remake of Sarge`s Army Men sub series with green/yellow plastic blood, gore, massive fully destructible physical environments and locals and swearing.

1

u/bsnimunf Dec 07 '21

Army men games became a complete joke. They were the original pump out a new version of a shit game every year.

1

u/CutesyBeef Dec 07 '21

Is that guy firing a bazooka with a sniper scope?

6

u/SchillMcGuffin Dec 07 '21

The limitations of plastic molding meant that a lot of the bazooka-armed classic toy soldiers had kind of exaggerated sights on their weapons. The ubiquitous TimMee soldiers of the 1960s and '70s (see the "U.S. Soldiers Series IV" link at that site) were probably the primary specific inspiration for the Army Men series games, as well as the characters in the Toy Story movies. You'll see that the figure in the OP's game box cover is pretty spot-on.

1

u/black_viking0 Dec 07 '21

We now have plastic women...

1

u/CircaCitadel Dec 07 '21

Such a good series. I remember Team Assault was a game me and my brother and friend would traditionally play every time he came over, even years after it came out. It took us so long to beat because we didn’t have a memory card so we had to restart from the beginning every time. We eventually did it all in one sitting because we had memorized literally everything about the game due to restarting it over the years. Great and frustrating memories.

They did not age well but are still fun to play. A remake would be amazing. The Sandbox map in COD WWII a few years ago reminded me a ton of that and made me want a remake as well.

1

u/Killerbee442 Dec 07 '21

Bruh. Memory unlocked.

1

u/StacheBandicoot Dec 07 '21

That would be so fun on today’s hardware. I’m picturing a stop motion kind of effect to everything.

1

u/Stpatty87 Dec 07 '21

That was my shit!!!! Fing loved that game.

1

u/Capek95 Dec 07 '21

army men air attack was the shit back then. so much coop content and fun it was madness

1

u/acewavelink Dec 07 '21

Those were fun games

1

u/DoomMoonBoon Dec 07 '21

I loved these games. So many great memories of watching my dad play them and talking to my uncle about it. Sadly the cynic in me doesn't believe the modern day gaming industry could pull it off.

1

u/deathbunnyy Dec 07 '21

Not really, the games would absolutely not hold up.

1

u/ManifestoHero Dec 07 '21

1

u/Moxiousone Dec 07 '21

Not that we need any more of those, but since we are dreaming: imagine a big studio like Rockstar doing a huge "open world" Army Men adjacent gam, but the map is a big family house, or a small neighbourhood...

1

u/MourningPath Dec 07 '21

I wish! I have a lot of fond memories of those games.

1

u/miakhalifafan1234 Dec 07 '21

of course!!!!!!!!

1

u/oWallis Dec 07 '21

The zombie levels in Army Men 2 always freaked me out as a kid. Tried playing them again recently and boy do they not hold up as well as I thought.

1

u/Nasssi Dec 07 '21

This would probably be better than Battlefield 2042. I mean it doesn't take a lot but still.

1

u/GuineaAnubis Dec 07 '21

Man! This was such a good game

1

u/Colanasou Dec 07 '21

Would make a good battle royale too.

Imagine parachuting into a train table or a lego city or even some toddlers overturned toy chest destroyed room.

1

u/Corrupt8069 Dec 07 '21

Absolutely these were the tops playing co-op with my buddy back as kids

1

1

u/Mr-hoffelpuff Dec 07 '21

ehm. will they not just totally fuck it up as they have done with most games this year particularly on the remake section?

1

u/Skyraider96 Dec 07 '21

Omg. Flashbacks.

I would LOVE to have these games remade.

1

u/Regiment4Magic Dec 07 '21

1

u/Sleepdprived Dec 07 '21

Mmo battlegield style play would be awesome. Switching maps between ww2 style beaches and fortresses, and giant outdoor backyards, and Lego levels... this could be a great thing and no bloody violence

1

u/anotherblmhater Dec 07 '21

Not with corent gen devs

1

u/sarcasmcannon Dec 07 '21

Only for 20 years now.

1

u/mr207 Dec 07 '21

This was a great game series. I don’t even remember them all but I definitely loved playing the ones on PC.

Not interested so much in a 3d / fps version to be honest. I feel like part of this games charm was its graphic style. I worry if someone tried to bring the game back for modern times this would get lost.

1

u/deafghost52 Dec 07 '21

Army Men: Advance on the GBA - played the shit out of that game. I should run it through an emulator someday…

1

u/dreadlord_avis Dec 07 '21

plastic, its fantastic.

1

u/NervousAd3412 Dec 07 '21

I guess we did toy soldiers war chest it’s not the same but it’s something used to play that game all the time with my cousins good times

1

u/codehawk64 Dec 07 '21

I remember finding this game in my computer for some reason but no idea how to even start the game. No idea whether it was a demo or something, but I got mad I couldn’t play it.

1

u/Different_Arachnid26 Dec 07 '21

The 1v1 on this was amazing... trying to get the the enemy flag, and hitting a shit ton of mines lol! Absolutley loved this game!

1

u/wezel99 Dec 07 '21

i vividly remember playing the original on PC. I had my 56k dial up and it was my first introduction into online gaming. We played on something called MPlayer and had clans and ranking sites. Those were good times indeed. I also played the hell out of sarges heros.

1

u/American_Excellence Dec 07 '21
