So many hours capturing that flag

222

u/projectmars Dec 06 '21

Playing with a buddy and hopping in a warthog to drive over to the enemy base and circle around it while laying down suppressing fire...

Good times. Good times.

So many hours getting spawn sniped by that asshole up in the background mountain.

31

u/nels5104 Dec 06 '21

Need better teammates to end that shit

27

u/conperani Dec 06 '21

Nah man, if that dude in the mountain was a straight shooter, CTF would be over in 5 minutes and there would be nothing you could do about it.

17

u/dcw9031 Dec 07 '21

For real. I used to climb outside the map with a ghost in back of red base and just punish ppl. Fun. But cheap as hell.

You ever wonder why we’re here

483

u/Lethargicpete Dec 06 '21

Its one of life's great mysterys isn't it?

354

u/Timmy2Gats Dec 06 '21

Why are we here? I mean, are we the product of some cosmic coincidence, or is there really a God watching everything? You know, with a plan for us and stuff. I don't know, man, but it keeps me up at night.

321

u/ZeroTrousers3D Dec 06 '21

What?! I mean why are we out here, in this canyon?

252

u/TisBagelBoi Dec 06 '21

Oh. Uh... yeah.

278

u/mclannahan Dec 06 '21

I mean think about it the only reason we have a blue base over here is because they have a red base over there and the only reason they have a red base there is because we have a blue base over here. Even if we pulled out today and red came and took our base then they would just have two bases in the middle of nowhere

I saw this post, came to the comments for this, looked over to my other screen to see Youtube recommending RvB S1 for absolutely no reason because I haven't watched, searched or even mentioned RvB in years. WTF.

65

Its s sign you should watch RvB again

13

12

u/KingHiei27 Dec 06 '21

Season 17 was a massive increase in quality. Too bad it took a nosedive right afterwards.

24

u/duplissi Dec 06 '21

It could just be that Halo is popular again and Google is recommending it to people who fit a certain profile?

This is one of the funniest lines in the history of gaming.

Exposing the divide between "We're just here to shoot each other online" and "Oh, but lore is so critical to the experience" and the absurdity of most game plots, and on and on and on. Throwing in the existential angst and funny voices is icing on the cake.

So. Good.

Endless hours playing on Halo PC trial version with my friends because none of us had any other maps

4

u/ClicketyClackity Dec 06 '21

That banshee was so OP. The Halo trial and AVP trial were both amazing. One basic map each. Both non-stop fun.

169

u/Witch_of_Dunwich Dec 06 '21

One of the best maps ever made.

63

u/qwicmbl Dec 06 '21

It’s so simple too.

39

u/myfantasyalt Dec 06 '21

Simple maps make for better gameplay on average. Maps have way too much design put into them for the sake of having a complex map. 5 good simple maps are better than one great complex map that noobs fuck up playing because there is too much strategy to them that isn’t immediately telegraphed to new players.

23

u/TylerBourbon Dec 06 '21

Well put. Blood Gulch from Halo, and Facing Worlds from UT2000 are hands down the best maps.

20

u/thered90 Dec 06 '21

Dust 2 from all series of cs is also a pretty goated map. Love it or hate it you can’t deny how successful that map is.

2fort is the official OG man. I remember playing ORIGINAL Team Fortress when it was still just a mod for Quake. I spent so much time playing that game, especially 2fort. On a 56k modem. I remember going to my friends house who had a DSL, and I couldn't snipe because I was so used to leading my shots by like a good foot and a half. The days of 256-450 ping being normal.

3

u/myfantasyalt Dec 06 '21

Lots of cs maps were really good. Not too long to learn, multiple engagement points without being completely confusing. Dust 1 I hear is unbalanced but from the hundreds of hours I played on it, it seemed fine for casual play.

2

u/Ansiremhunter Dec 07 '21

The chokes were too in favor of the defense iirc on dust

4

u/PancAshAsh Dec 06 '21

Facing worlds is one that made it into every UT game, it's just a good map.

u/CourageOfOthers Dec 06 '21

I’m curious about why it was indeed such a good map. Or am I nostalgic? BF2042 is heavily criticised at the moment for being so sparse. But you can clearly create great gameplay with very little. Or were we just blinded by how modern it was, and revisiting would just make us recognise all of its flaws?

55

u/MrE134 Dec 06 '21

It was great for it's simplicity. I don't know that it had any flaws, but life would be boring if everything was that simple.

45

u/WangsWilly Dec 06 '21

I think what made the maps from this game feel so good was the slow walking speed. It made normal size maps feel huge while simultaneously not being empty. You also weren’t constantly being shot in the back because the enemy is faster than Usain Bolt.

71

u/WayofSoul Dec 06 '21

It’s an open map that can easily be crossed. The designs of the hills provide cover for long randge fights, the side cavern allows for some close range combat. The size of the map lends to vehicles. The forts are hotspots that are among the least safe places to be on the map, making them combat zones.

There’s so much in the subtle design of Blood Gulch that made it an amazingly fun map.

21

u/MSmejkal Dec 06 '21

I loved that you had to commit for the rockets. No half assing in the middle open when Shiela wad rumbling down the road at you lol

14

u/Canuck-eh-saurus Dec 06 '21

Don't forget the shotgun rooms (the inside of the bases).

15

u/CreationismRules Dec 06 '21

I played it like a week ago on MCC. It's still good, lol.

10

u/drmirage809 Dec 06 '21

Probably a little from column A and a little from column B. I played through Halo CE's campaign for the first time ever recently (better late than never) and there's some parts of that game that have held up super well, even after 20 years. Some other parts are really showing their age, but the foundation of an awesome shooter still shines through.

4

u/123mop Dec 06 '21

Battlefield and halo are massively different games. Lack of cover isn't as threatening when the only weapons that have an aim down sight functionality are single fire, and the one that's actually quite good at long range has to be acquired on the map rather than spawned with.

Plus since you don't need to slow down to fight back against an enemy at a distance you're not as vulnerable to that type of weapon in the open.

3

u/DoYouNotHavePhones Dec 07 '21

Totally different games. Blood Gulch was designed for 4-16 players. BF maps are designed for 128 players.

The open design of Blood Gulch is so that a small number of defending players can still keep most of the map under observation.

BF maps being sparse was intended to keep fights feeling fast, so that players can't "camp" in cover. In effect it just means that any non-vehicle movement on the map is practically suicide, because you'll be immediately targeted by 25 snipers.

Someone at my high school back in 07 figured out how to get this on all the computers in one of the labs and we'd all play whenever the teacher wasn't in eyesight of our screens. Kids would start laughing when they'd see someone get blown up and then would have to quickly tab out and try and play it off when the teacher would come over. God that shit was so fun.

9

u/m48a5_patton Dec 06 '21

In 2002 we installed Unreal Tournament on all the computers in one of the computer labs at the high school. The teacher didn't care as long as we got our work done and weren't too loud. It was a great motivator, get your work done and then you could get in on some death match action before the bell rang lol! Good times! sigh...

7

u/DjSzymek Dec 06 '21

Oh hell yeah, we did the same thing back in middle school.

2

u/Dhiox Dec 06 '21

Back in high school in a IT program, we had basically finished all we had to do for the year, but still had a few weeks left. We had a closet full of surpluses IT equipment the country sent us (Because we totally had a use for ram measured in megabytes in 2016) so we cobbled together what parts were still usable 8n the modern era and made a ramshackle computer lab full of Frankenstein machines manually hooked up to a switch to play Lan Halo and Counterstrike.

It was a blast. Our teacher managed to make an end of the year Lan party educational

2

u/keeslinp Dec 06 '21

Everyone in my school tried to sign up for the same elective class cause the teacher didn't give a fuck if people played Halo in class as long as the assignments got done so we'd all have huge LAN parties in class.

I honestly think this could come back. But there needs to be a pregame lobby again. And you don’t immediately disperse to separate lobbies after each game. The shit talking and revenge games were some of my favorite parts in earlier fps multiplayer games. Now it sometimes feels like I’m just playing really well programmed bots. No shit talking, no late night talks with strangers about what’s beyond our world. I miss that stuff the most and believe its what really made great gameplay and kept people around before all the customization stuff

17

u/Montauket Dec 06 '21

I’m really enjoying infinite (despite its flaws). But I can’t fathom why I’d spend money to look “cool” in a FPS game. You literally only see yourself at the load screen, start up, and during vehicles.

At least other games I can see my action figure do stuff.

11

You can tell because the Coagulation version in Halo 2 added a lower level in each base whereas in CE it was just the ground floor + roof. I think in Reach they went back to the CE style.

Jesus Christ I actually got goosebumps looking at that, it's been so long.

6

u/bossbang Dec 06 '21

I have to say, from what I've played of Halo Infinite I am very impressed.

They managed to capture the floaty feel of classic Halo, while adding a layer of tactics to the Ranked arena gameplay

There's room for skilled players to get those sweet BR shots, but it also rewards teamplay and coordination. And the time to kill is enough it doesn't feel like a chore to down an enemy, but enough for your to respond if the enemy shoots first

Glad to see Halo bounce back from trying to copy every other generic first person shooter with ADS mechanics in Halo 4, and ditching Promethean weapons from 4 and 5 for a new arsenal of weapons too!

12

u/Zjoee Dec 06 '21

Best multiplayer match I ever played was on this map in the Spartan vs Elites mode. My team was down two players, but I kept grabbing the sniper rifles with the active camo armor ability and camping out on the cliffs. I ended up with 56 kills and like 3 deaths. We ended up tying at the end, 88 to 88.

12

u/FailingtoFail Dec 06 '21

I knew my days of being able to beat my son in games had come to an end when he learned how to snipe from the cliffs. I got my single kill that match by finally luring him down and landing a warthog on him. Still laugh at the memory of the 'Muuuuum!!' scream from the settee.

Funnily enough, we ran through co-op CE last night. Spent a good portion of the time killing each other, sometimes even accidentally. Some things don't change.

I haven’t played a second of that game but red vs blue made it instantly recognizable

Still best large/medium sized map for any game in my opinion. Simple. For the most part symmetric, but still a small amount of wide variety. Open but still has sight lines.

Love this map.

My buddies and I would play online with Xboxconnect and name our room "4 Hot college chicks looking to play some CTF +5 hogs only"

We'd have a full lobby all night

I was responsible for all the networking for our LAN parties. Not that it was too difficult but I was the only one who knew the difference between a crossover cable and a regular Ethernet cable. Or that old wired router that your friend was going to toss was out ticket to 4 Xbox/16 player Halo LAN parties. I guess back then that kind of info was available online but we just didn’t look for it.
