After 2 years of crazy hard work, our first full-fledged game was released today... A dimension-bending game about shadows! What do you think?

Concept sounds cool, but you guys need a new teaser editor. The clips are too short and don't allot enough time for the viewer to really grasp the mechanics of your game, which is the major selling point.

Def gonna check it out, and major gratz on your first full release!

u/Elliot-tricity Oct 21 '21

Also doesn't help that the name isnt mentioned anywhere.

27

u/Bristonian Oct 21 '21

On many of these posts that is done on purpose to avoid looking too much like an advertisement

On many of these posts that is done on purpose to avoid looking too much like an advertisement

That's exactly what this is but, with out any relevant information.

Yeah, I watched through it twice before I realized the shadows created in the overhead view create the platforms for the sidescrolling view.

Cool idea, bad trailer.

Exactly what I was thinking. I think I see what's going on, but I'm not sure.

361

u/Jemima_Snuggleduck Oct 21 '21

I just get really frustrated by the fact that (1) the titles of these posts are always written in the same format, presumably by the same advertising company, and (2) these posts are always filled with a massive string of bot-like responses.

These posts should be clearly marked by mods as adverts.

194

u/elbriga14 Oct 21 '21

Hey man, look I get what you mean
We posted this in this format because it seems to get people's attention and that's what we want for the game
I wish we had an advertising company at our disposal honestly

I made a bot for our discord server and it's so buggy that it sends a message every 3 months warning people that it's wednesday, so I can assure you it's not the case.

Are other people doing it? I don't know... I just wanted to get the word out about our game that we worked hard on, our studio is Monochrome, there's like 8 of us, I'm Gabriel the main game dev and game designer, and never worked in advertising! For what it's worth!

Beep boop. <end transmission>

u/Haidakun Oct 21 '21 edited Oct 21 '21

What’s the game name? To everyone liking this he replied to someone else: Tandem a tale of shadows

15

u/ForksnFrenchFries Oct 21 '21

Like pulling teeth

26

u/U_GOT_RED_ON_U Oct 21 '21

I don't see an issue here. If I put this much work into anything you'd better believe I'd be posting about it. Good luck with your game.

15

u/Hand-Sanitizer666 Oct 21 '21

Tbf wednesdays are pretty fuckin scary

2

u/sumsimpleracer Oct 21 '21

What's the question to 42?

2

u/Naticus105 Oct 21 '21

You need a second bot that reassures people the other bot is wrong and it is indeed not Wednesday and send it out every 4 months. But only on Wednesdays.

2

u/MODN4R Oct 22 '21

Spent two years coding a game. Can't set up a discord bot....

Me and my fwends made a game 🥺👉👈 ... I think it sucks but my girlfriend said maybe you will like it?

2

u/aspblaze420 Oct 21 '21

Checked out some gameplay footage of it on youtube. Looks like a puzzle game with extremely simple puzzles. I don't think adults would really enjoy this one unless they just want to shut their brains off and move a character from point a to point b without a challenge.

Move girl to a position where a shadow creates a bath for teddybear to walk on > walk teddybear to a button > button press now allows girl to continue onwards > map completed. And each of the maps seem to last like a minute.

3

With the shadows/gothic look, could it be Chthephen?

15

u/ace_of_spade_789 Oct 21 '21

Wouldn't Stephen be pronounced Stefen then? Or is the pH silent making it pronounced Steen?

Either way I love posts from developers that are titled "look at this game we painstakingly crafted with eight years of our life and had no funds or backing, while living in our parents backyard in a tent using windows 95 and flash on a outdated computer from the sixties that takes up the other half of the yard... We just released it and want you to watch our clip, which doesn't tell the name and doesn't show much of anything... But colors. Thanks for the love"

honestly cant tell much about the game from this video

56

u/mushroomparty52 Oct 21 '21

People saying that this looks cool are definitely bots. No way anyone can watch this footage and say “yeah I definitely know what this game is about or what it even is”

61

u/kingofthemonsters Oct 21 '21

I mean I don't need to really know what's going on to think it looks cool. Smh why half of reddit always gotta be bots.

126

u/OrkfaellerX Oct 21 '21

Puzzle game with two characters - a girl and her teddy. She's controlled from the top down perspective, he's from the side. She manipulates shadows, and he platforms on them. What are you struggeling with exactly?

24

u/Brucethematt Oct 21 '21

Thank you for being the adult in this thread.

18

u/Gorillafist12 Oct 21 '21

I ascertained the same details from it but you have to remember not everyone is able to process information as quickly as others. Clips should be longer to be accessible to everyone

3

u/PANTONE-PURPLE Oct 21 '21

I didn't understand any part of the trailer, it was pretty but I had no idea what the gameplay is supposed to be like or what was going on. It's cool you figured it out but it's not exactly obvious to everyone

3

u/mushroomparty52 Oct 21 '21

I’d say that isn’t clear at all actually because the clips are only about 2 seconds long so it’s hard to understand what I’m watching.

3

u/Gorillafist12 Oct 21 '21

It was clear to me but I know not everyone absorbs information visually as quickly as others.

17

u/skullmatoris Oct 21 '21

Really? It's not a great trailer but I can tell a few things about game mechanics after watching the video a few times. I think it looks cool

7

u/imliterallyfive Oct 21 '21

I got downvoted for saying the same thing lol.

5

u/TheStinkyRebel Oct 21 '21

This is the first post I've seen people complaining about bots so hard. I was downvoted for saying it looked too as well lmao. Feel like bots are complaining about bots.

3

u/Snuffleupagus03 Oct 21 '21

I think it looks cool, but I have almost no idea what the game play is. Makes me worried that there are tiny snippets of compelling graphics, but not long segments of compelling gameplay, hence the short snippets.

2

u/Hexegesis Oct 21 '21

It's an appallingly bad trailer but a couple of shots revealed what might be a cool, mind-bending mechanic where the shadows cast in one perspective creates the terrain for another perspective (?). That's a great hook and that alone is enough to grab people's interest.

Shame everything else about the teaser is incoherent nonsense.

1

u/Thalrador Oct 21 '21

95

u/Crackracket Oct 21 '21

I don't understand what's happening

125

u/Snacks_is_Hungry Oct 21 '21

Basically devs will pay for upvotes and bot comments to make it seem like there's more interest than there really is. Enough upvotes and you get featured on r/all which is usually the goal. A lot of people can see through this, and are tired of it, since it's manipulative of what a "real advertisement" is. I.E. it's not marked as an ad and it's not provided by an ad source. It's just vote manipulation to reach the masses, and it's shady af.

Basically any person that advertises like this is guaranteeing that many people on reddit will not ever play their game, because people don't like to be advertised to in a stealthy way.

57

u/jesteronly Oct 21 '21

I think they mean with the actual game play since the video is so chopped up that it's too difficult to tell what's happening.

But what you said too

11

u/hexxcellent Oct 21 '21

not surprised by this one bit. even if the trailer doesn't explain much it does show a tremendous amount of work from just the animations, character models, pre-rendered cutscenes. to accomplish this in two years, they're clearly not hung up for a budget.

8

u/Snacks_is_Hungry Oct 21 '21

Exactly. A part of their budget for this game was the advertisement we are reading now.

2

u/BlursedMurse Oct 21 '21

Why don’t they ban self-promotion? Seems like that would mostly solve the problem.

8

u/Snacks_is_Hungry Oct 21 '21

Well it's kind of a tough gray area. I don't see anything wrong with an actual indie developer posting their game, I just don't want to see the bot comments that prove that they paid for it. When you advertise like this you lose trust in the community. When you advertise without paying for views, people know it pretty clearly. And at that point, it becomes popular online because people ACTUALLY take an interest in it.

It's Reddit itself that needs to fight against upvote bots and comment bots which is very difficult.

2

u/BlursedMurse Oct 21 '21

Interesting! Thanks for the response. I used to check r/gaming every day but it just seems to be more and more of this stuff, with people complaining about it. I guess the community has to collectively decide what they want to see. Personally it’s just making me tune out cuz I see enough ads every day elsewhere.

1

u/TheLandstrider Oct 21 '21

But why not give the name of the game then?

244

u/cowboys30 Oct 21 '21

Is this post being padded with bots or paid posters? So many commenters saying some variation of “NGL this game looks so cool”

105

u/quincy_taylor Oct 21 '21

It's every post of someone promoting their game. They all have the same comments.

7

u/RedditorHatred Oct 21 '21

Poor "indy developers". It ain't even worth to advertise anymore because of the cookie cutter bullshit they post.

Or maybe it is. Who knows how many people actually fall for this

40

u/tonybenwhite Oct 21 '21

I love that every one of these game advertisements has the same “this looks so dope! Is this on steam?” comment, to which the OP replies within seconds with the link to the steam page.

Everyone knows this will be on steam, it’s the #1 indie platform. That’s 100% a bot account asking the question so the OP can provide the store link “organically”

18

u/RedditorHatred Oct 21 '21

"Is this on steam?"

"Nope! I love shooting myself in the foot and not posting my game to the #1 way of circulating money"

14

u/alphanaut Oct 21 '21

The trailer on Steam sheds a lot more light on the game. Looks like its a puzzler game, requiring perspective adjustments as you switch between characters. I love this kind of thinking - reminds me of the type of puzzle solving thinking required in Portal, except here with an impressive visuals.

I am a bot(s). This game and or video is to exceed happy reactions.

I agree with the others though. If this is the trailer then have maybe some fonts pop up saying things like “use shadows” (not that dumb but the jist) just so players watching a video versus reading about it know what the drawing point are. It looks sick though especially for a project done in 2yrs.

6

u/Ashenspire Oct 21 '21

Girl manipulates shadows to help bear help her solve puzzles. Seemed a fairly simple concept from just the first clip.

u/Mizamar Oct 21 '21 Wholesome

Has this sub became a place for devs to advertise their shitty indy games for free?

53

u/Battle_Bear_819 Oct 21 '21

Yes, and it's almost always a side-scrolling puzzle platformer with dark themes and a moody setting.

14

u/PrisonChickenWing Oct 21 '21

I've noticed that too. I guess it's cause those games are easy to mass produce? These indie game adverts are truly almost always a 2D and not true 3D game

3

u/Battle_Bear_819 Oct 21 '21

Yeah they're pretty easy to make, relative to other types of games. You can get away with cutting costs and time in a lot of areas.

In defence though why is it any different when people posts about triple AAA games with huge advertising budgets which essentially is free advertisement for them? So I see no problem indie devs advertising their games. Hypocritical people complaining about these posts yet giving Sony, MS and Nintendo free advertisements. Indie devs don’t have advertising budgets same as big publisher do so occasionally we see posts like this here. Games like untitled goose simulator went viral because of posts like this yet r/gaming shilled for it for weeks alongside Among Us.. I read the same complaints every time some random indie devs post their games.

6

u/TheStinkyRebel Oct 21 '21

Probably because people are butt hurt others are living their dream of making a video game. I don't get what the big deal is about someone promoting their own game.

Almost as much as it’s become a place for people to complain about it

4

u/RedditorHatred Oct 21 '21

Forums are for people to discuss things. Not pay your way to the top in a dishonest way. Dont know why thats so confusing

5

u/lonnie123 Oct 21 '21

And the things we discuss are games, like the one in this post. Without them we have nothing to talk about here.

The cynical “omg it’s an ad for a shitty indie game” is tired, possibly wrong, and starts no discussion

Why not just…. Move on to the next post ? (Most likely about how shitty Nintendos online service is, how buggy Bethesda games are, or all the other super original content in this sub. Heaven forbid an indie dev try to get eyes on their game here)

1

u/TheStinkyRebel Oct 21 '21

So do you complain about all the other ads on reddit too? Your comment makes absolutely no sense. Let people be proud of their game and share it.

3

u/winged_entity Oct 22 '21

I think it looks cool! Visually, especially.

The game is called Tandem. The other trailer explains it more. You create shadows in one world and control the other (the Teddy Bear).

3

u/winged_entity Oct 22 '21

Idk what's up with these comments but the game does genuinely look beautiful. Great work! The steam trailer does look very interesting

10

u/Anongad Oct 21 '21

It looks like 2 games badly meshed into one from this video. Not a good start you need to make an actual trailer not whatever this is.

38

u/PM_UR_NSFW_ALT Oct 21 '21

Too much going on. Both in the trailer with short cuts, but also just in general. Since this is kind of a platformer, compare Hollow Knight and Metroid Dread. Both are detailed, especially Hollow Knight as known for it's artwork and incredible world buildong detail, but you can readily see what's playable space and platforms versus background. Your game is so high energy and taxing to look at.

2

u/d4vezac Oct 21 '21

Maybe don’t compare it to two side-scrolling metroidvanias when this is an alternating side scroller/top-down puzzle game? The only problem is the clips are too short so the video is just throwing too much at the viewer too fast

7

u/Noodlespanker Oct 21 '21

Another shadow game. Iris Fall, In My Shadow, etc there's literally hundreds of these with the same gimmick. It's not exactly mind blowing.

5

u/TheStinkyRebel Oct 21 '21

Damn, didn't realize how toxic this sub is just because a small development team created a game and put out a weak demo trailer. Yall need to shill out and be more supportive of people. Pretty sad to say the least, and surprised a mod hasn't locked the comments yet.

13

u/ISBW Oct 21 '21

Trailer is very boring and how the fuck am I supposed to even know what the game is

3

u/nannernutmuff Oct 21 '21

those were both incredible games. why does everyone have to say "this game copied that game"

people are influenced by what they enjoy, im sure those games played a role, but ive never seen a game use both sidescrolling and birds eye view in the same game. closest thing i can think of is 2d mario inside of mario odyssey, but this is still different. did he copy mario or is it just an idea he saw and put it out in his own way? skyrim literally copies itself every other year onto another platform, a huge percentage of games that have come out in the last 15 years have been remasters, and youre complaining about this?

/u/elbriga14 your game looks cool and its on my wishlist for when im not ballin on a budget.

Found a better trailer. Seems like a fleshed-out version of Toodee and Topdee.

Didn't know this sub is filled with douches and know-it-all game devs to have a such a nonchalent and overly critical reaction to this trailer. I think this looks like a really unique and nice-looking game that doesn't look amateur at all. Does the teaser not show any uncut gameplay footage? Yes, but I'm still definitely intrigued.

Wtf am I looking at?

9

u/Mr_Hellpop Oct 21 '21

I think you should mention the title of the game in your subject.

4

u/elbriga14 Oct 21 '21

Tandem: a Tale of Shadows

But yeah... my bad!

28

u/Mr_Viper Oct 21 '21

The #1 best free marketing you could ever possibly get is a post reaching the top of /r/gaming... and you not only posted an incomprehensible gameplay gif... but you also forgot to include the name of your game? wtf

unless of course that's all part of an exponentially more annoying marketing strategy to get people into the comments and asking what the game's called so it shows up more in google searches...

ugh ... this whole thing sucks ... but whatever, do what you gotta do to make sales I guess

It looks cool, if I can give some feedback, the movement seems very clunky and slow, I hope it's not going to feel annoying while playing. One part of the game looks like a strategic platformer and moving so slowly would make me want to have a way to speed up

4

u/elbriga14 Oct 21 '21

Thanks! The pacing of the game is pretty relaxed so we don't think it'll be an issue, but I see your point! Hopefully we balanced it correctly

4

u/liverspeed Oct 21 '21

Reminds me alot of Contrast, its a game with a very similar concept just executed differently. If you like the looks of this game youll like it too check it out.

The first free ps4 game day 1 years ago..I loved it

3

u/kittensyay Oct 21 '21

Looks shit.

1

u/kry_some_more Oct 21 '21

The gameplay looks ok, BUT you need to fire your trailer creator or at least take this one note to heart.

The trailer jumps from scene to scene far too quickly. Each scene is suppose to show something happening in the game, from near beginning to near conclusion. Your trailer is just a bunch of moving screenshots. It shows the game moving, but not a certain experience that's happening in the game, from start to end, and then a new small scene from start to finish.

It feels like each scene is 2 to 3 seconds shorter than it should be, and it jumps far too quickly to the next scene, before the previous one was actually ready to be done.

I'd suggest watching some other game trailers to see what I'm referring to.

Guys dont fall for this shit. Its not a small team or a bedroom coder. Look at there own site for hatinh interactive andd you'll discover that there business models revolve around collecting data and using 500+ influences to push their narrative.

If you are that size go advertise like a normal game company than trying to come off as an indie publisher.

27

u/elbriga14 Oct 21 '21

Hey! Hatinh Interactive is our publisher, we are Monochrome, there was 5 of us in the team and now 8. And we are only the second game published by them, they're very much indie! We had to work on our game in parallel as working for clients for these two years to get the money to pay the team's salaries and benefits while financing the game.

But I get that it's hard to trust anyone on reddit. We're not bedroom coders, but the success of this game is what will allow us to stay indie and not go look for funds from a publisher for our next game

-26

u/Helloscottykitty Oct 21 '21

Dude, go double check your own site. "an internal global network of 500+ influencers from the US and Europe"

Also if your company makes money working for another company, no one considers that an indie company that's a contractor.

It's hard to trust you when even a little digging makes you come across as disingenuous.

7

u/DeRedditUserX Oct 21 '21

Do you not know what a publisher is?

7

u/1minatur Oct 21 '21

OP created their game in a small team (8 people, or whatever they said), likely without pay at all. Once their game was nearing completion, they started pitching it to publishers. The publishers they approached either told them they weren't interested, or came back to them with an offer. OP's team agreed upon a deal with Hatinh Interactive. More than likely, Hatinh offered to help with advertising in exchange for a cut of the profits of the game. Hatinh likely isn't paying anything to OP, only paying a portion of the advertising costs, and had virtually nothing else to do with the game. Hatinh did not create the game.

That's like me saying I just wrote my first book, all by myself, but you're saying "No, you didn't make it all by yourself. Scholastic published your book, and Scholastic is a huge company!"

I don't disagree with you on the advertising in this subreddit, but OP didn't lie about anything, and it's not against the rules to showcase a game you made. Should it be? That's a different question entirely. For the record, I think so.

Who hurt you? Are you OK?

6

u/RedditorHatred Oct 21 '21 edited Oct 21 '21

You are getting downvoted but I am also tired of these "hey I'm just a redditor like you that just created a game come check it out *pays money to advertise and get top post*

1

u/Helloscottykitty Oct 21 '21

You have made my day, my karma can take the heat and it will be worth it to warn others not to fall for it.

Not to say its a bad game I too just am sick of people using this site to abvertise an actual company and fear this will lead to a shitter reddit experience as every company imbeds themselves into sub reddits as a form of advertisement.

If you are a solo or genuine indie developer I do want to see your work but this company is boasting about having 500 people working for them in marketing.

How much did you get paid to comment this

2

u/Bender_on_Bum Oct 21 '21

I didn't? I guess people can't be nice to small devs in here

13

u/elbriga14 Oct 21 '21

Thank you!! Yes it's on Steam:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1436920/Tandem_A_Tale_of_Shadows/

It's also on GOG and Epic though! And consoles actually

9

u/gandalfpensieve Oct 21 '21

congrats on the release. It looks very interesting and the lighting and camera work seem very intriguing. Nice idea overall.

However, I don't think you trailer works very well. If you want to get more attention to the game probably should think of a different narration and editing.

6

u/elbriga14 Oct 21 '21

Thank you! Yes we were very very busy with the release and maybe should have spent a little more time on it, however this is only a 20s gif, we have full trailers out there with much more care put into them

Thank you for the kind feedback though

-8

u/Joggyogg Oct 21 '21

I see it's 30% off, did steam do that or did you guys do that? I'm always curious how steam sales and discounts work.

3

u/elbriga14 Oct 21 '21

We do that! It's to celebrate the release, and we have a big stream event tonight, normally it would be 10% off at release

It's always good to kickstart the sales to go up into steam's algorithm apparently

But Steam cannot discount a game without developper's consent at all, sometime it offers to take part in discounts or sale events but no obligations

this sub is just free advertising space for shit games

1

u/C47man Oct 21 '21

Grats on finishing your game. Art style looks cool. Fire your video editor. That's probably the worst teaser edit I've ever seen. It doesn't demonstrate any of the mechanics of the game, how things work, what makes it 'special', etc.

It's like you tossed a bunch of footage at someone with no explanation and then they stitched stuff together at random to hit a deadline. Why are shadows in your title? What does dimension bending mean? The point of that video was to show that off, but it doesn't come close.

-17

u/DarehegosGaming Oct 21 '21

The art design is wicked! How many people did you guys have creating the design?

2

u/elbriga14 Oct 21 '21

Thank you so much! We are a small team so more than half the team has a hand in it on some level. Guillaume is the Art Director so he made the concepts art, Eli and Raphael made level dressing and assets, a part time collaborator Hermance made some assets and Axel did some lighting, VFX...

So between 4 and 5 people were working on the design (our team varied in size between 5 and 10 people during developpement)
