8 directional digital movement with analog stick aiming! Now you can suck at both fps and third person games.

326

u/-UMBRA_- Oct 21 '21

Yeah to get the best we need analog stick left and mouse on the right lol

75

u/I-declare-bankruptsy Oct 21 '21

There is a guy who made one of those. Has a little thumb pad attachment for the right thumb and half the controller is touch pad and the left is still standard stick.

48

u/RenownedDumbass Oct 21 '21

So a Steam Controller?

16

u/I-declare-bankruptsy Oct 21 '21

I think that the Steam controller had it's issues/compromises that still made mouse and keyboard preferred. I would be interested in trying out this guys custom controller since it seems like it upgrades the experience

27

u/ozzien20 Oct 21 '21

The biggest issue with the Steam Controller was that it had to be individually calibrated and configured for every game before you use it and Valve failed to make that obvious. I was going to return mine then I discovered the community preset configurations and it became my favorite gamepad ever. Before you start the game set the controller to the highest rated or most upvoted Preset Config and you're golden.

8

u/I-declare-bankruptsy Oct 21 '21

I don’t see how a touchpad is even remotely comparable to a mouse though. Like the steam controller or any smartphone touchscreen game. A mouse destroys the touchpad. I’d say I prefer the feeling of an analog stick to a touchpad or touchscreen.

The only hybrid I can think of that seems to work well is the little keyboard pad with a right analog stick for the thumb. It has the various keys arranged in an ergonomic way for your 4 fingers and your thumb to move the stick. The mouse is the same.

Seems like a worse joystick. I'm sure this guy has practiced with it and gotten pretty good, but there is no way it is as accurate as a mouse. It behaves 99% like a standard joystick, so I don't really see the point. At best it is a bigger/bulkier steam controller.

83

u/Meteorite12 Oct 21 '21

The only positive is that in stuff like hollow knight there’d no longer be times you hold the stick a bit too far in one direction to pogo. Beyond stuff like that, useless.

u/Zeptic Oct 21 '21

It's more of a preference than objectively better, really.

10

u/Meteorite12 Oct 21 '21

Personally I notice I seem to tend to hold controllers a bit weird so when my thumb is resting on the control stick, if I try to do a diagonal it’ll sometimes go a bit too far in one direction or the other. It’s much worse on switch controllers where the controllers aren’t being held at a specific angle relative to me (almost never use that connector bit).

It usually doesn’t cause that much of a problem, but it’s a lot easier having clearly defined directions with a keyboard (or a d pad, so a controller can work too depending on how the controls are mapped).

29

Splitfish FragFX for PC and you have your “best of both worlds”. I’ve been using this for years as I had limited wrist movement on my left arm due to a motorbike accident some years ago. My wrist is a lot better now but I kept using this device as it’s brilliant.

5

u/Cho_SeungHui Oct 21 '21

Nice, I've been looking for something like this. I'll happily switch between whatever peripherals work best for a game (and believe it or not the opposite of this, a handheld thumb-trackball thing can be even snappier than a mouse with infinite travel once you learn to free spin and stop it with precision; people'd think you were an aimbot) and I've been feeling the need for a way to have analogue in my left hand while I'm using a mouse on my right while upside-down on my laptop with my ass in the air

5

u/bramouleBTW Oct 21 '21

Check out the azeron as well. Not too many games support full 360 degree movement but in any case you can configure to use omnidirectional through the joystick.

2

Why don't they have the opposite of this? Mouse in right hand, some sort of movement knunchuck in the left hand. Or at very least make special keyboards with analog wasd keys

10

u/fchowd0311 Oct 21 '21

Yes. I hate how player controls in PC games you can't control movement speed anywhere as intuitively as with a thumbstick. Makes stealth games more annoying. You only have like 2 levels of movement speed you can chose from.

Yeah its a pain to rebind not gonna lie. I would ADORE any game that came with a prebuilt WASD <-> ESDF swap option.

But it takes very little time to adapt once you rebind. I switched over to "space bar to shoot, left click to jump" and wow... now THAT takes a long time to adjust to.

6

u/aCloverLoki Oct 21 '21

Spacebar to shoot. Ok satan

3

u/Li5y Oct 21 '21

(Copied from my other response)

Haha the idea is that when you click the left click, you're tensing your
mouse hand and will move the mouse ever so slightly. In competitive
shooters, you cant afford your mouse to be even slightly off target.
Not that I'm a pro FPS player, but I like the idea.

2

u/aCloverLoki Oct 21 '21

Oh that’s genius! I do exactly that (tense up) and I always tell myself I just need to practice more.

Naga, that was it lol. I liked it for stuff like RuneScape, where you have like abilities and shit like that. Minecraft too, really anything with a hotbar. Took some feeling around but I got it eventually

8

10

u/booga_booga_partyguy Oct 21 '21

Yeah, Razer products are VERY hit and miss. If it works, it works great. If it doesn't...

My Naga is around 3-4 years old and still solid as ever. Before that, I had a Razer Mamba that got bricked in 1.5 months. It's how I got my Naga - they replaced the Mamba with it.

u/Blinkdawg15 Oct 21 '21

I only have two thumb buttons and I can see how more would be helpful.

11

u/christoroth Oct 21 '21

1000% this. Keyboard movement and extra keys for strafe, crouch, run, jump never worked for me (left handed so maybe that's part of the problem).

I know in FPS's everyone runs fast as possible all the time but I like the analogue nature of sticks for movement. Still surprises me that 8 digital keys on a keyboard for movement plus mouse for aiming is seen as the best answer and nothing has come along to beat it in 20 years!

Havent tried motion based aiming enough but saw some good comparison videos for accuracy and speed. That gives stick plus buttons/triggers for movement, firing and weapon selection/reload etc with quick, accurate aiming. I imagine it's not ideal to try and do both at once though and probably requires more concentration. Should be an option at least.

9

u/nerdjp PC Oct 21 '21

IMO the best thing for casual games is a gyro capable controller. You have the more comfortable controller with analog sticks and the more precise aiming with gyro (when needed, just for fine adjustments), it's not as good as the mouse but way better than analog sticks. Nerrel made 2 awesome videos talking about this kind of motion.

2

u/christoroth Oct 21 '21

Gyro's the word I was failing to use but meant when I said motion.

This is the video I've seen that I was thinking of : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZUiWHnTqS8

This also concludes that gyro isn't as good (accurate or quick) as a mouse but considerably better than sticks.

Another consideration is feel. It's been a while for me but fps using mouse to aim is too much like just moving a cursor on a 2d screen to a target and clicking a button. Sure it works but it's not aiming a gun. Sticks aren't either. gyro is a bit closer you are at least pointing in 3d space. None of them beat the PS Aim controller in VR though (just wish I didnt get motion sickness so bad!).

Imagine the design of controllers, if humans had 3 hands. Or someday we evolve to use our legs as hands while sitting on a chair, hmm..... Wait a minute we can still use our legs to control something while sitting on a chair, like a gaint trackpad as in laptops.

84

u/Laser6706 Oct 21 '21

Imagine the design of controllers, if humans had 3 hands.

You mean the N64?

18

u/Ishamoridin Oct 21 '21

I kinda liked the flexibility of having 3 different button configurations depending how you held it. Not enough games made good use of it but it was a solid concept imo.

19

u/Viltris Oct 21 '21

It was a novel idea at the time, fitting both a joystick and a d-pad, and effectively a third shoulder button with its Z trigger.

And then the Dualshock controller comes out and shows that, hey, we can do everything the N64 controller can do, but with two hands. And the rest is history.

6

u/ENGAGERIDLEYMOTHERFU Oct 21 '21

The ultimate evolution: a dualshock with four handles - the two for analogue sticks, a third for a mini racing wheel/Atari-style paddle, and a fourth for a Steam Controller-esque trackpad.

While most games don't support it, fortunately you *can* use a keyboard and mouse for a few titles. I use it as my main method of playing FFXIV on PS.

This is an abomination but I NEED to see this in action

People don’t play with a PC for the keyboard! It’s the mouse!

Does it also function as a mouse?

The worst of both worlds.

Fun fact: Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev agreed that if aliens ever attacked the earth they would end the Cold War and unite to fight back.

Similarly, console and PC gamers can unite and proclaim from the mountaintops one thing in response to seeing this controller: it’s shit.

u/HeyLookTheseAreWords Oct 21 '21

yeah fuck that, just start over and replace the right stick with a USB port for a mouse

What the fuck is wrong with you?

2

u/Lauris024 Oct 21 '21

For a guy that is completely oblivious in consoles, my dumbass thought this is some weird Switch and the game is shown on that mini display

2

u/Zuphixavex PC Oct 21 '21

The worst of both.

I actually played one game with Controller + Mouse, as the movement is smoother with the joystick, but you ALWAYS want to aim with a mouse.

It doesn't work if you need function keys (E, F, Shift, Ctrl on keyboard; A, B, X, Y or triangle, circle, square, cross on controller) but if you only need to move and shoot, it's great.

2

u/lRhanonl Oct 21 '21

Take the worst part of mnk and put it on controller to replace the best part of the controller. Well done

2

u/blueaxolotl64 Oct 21 '21

The worst of both worlds

2

u/Leprosy_Disease Oct 21 '21

War ended because everyone was too busy puking from such a revolting sight

2

u/carasc5 Oct 21 '21

This is the worst part of both.

2

u/I-Am-Camden Oct 21 '21

Only if the war ends because we all agree this is an atrocity.

2

u/ManbosMambo Oct 21 '21

What war? It's the worst of both worlds lmao

2

u/craidie Oct 21 '21

I don't give a shit about the keyboard. controller movement is a lot better than keyboards.

HOWEVER. The mouse I'm not willing to part ways with. Aiming with a controller just isn't happening for me.

u/LestHeBeNamedSilver Oct 21 '21

This is why I play with a controller in my left hand and with a mouse in my right

2

u/metalgamer Oct 21 '21
