If your friends are trying to get you to play Dota, they aren't your friends.

Source: 900 wasted goddamn hours of my life jesus christ go do something less painful and toxic, like wrestling grizzlies or swimming in radioactive waste.

I think I’m going to actually lol. I’m 90 hours in and I can’t say I’ve actually enjoyed a single minute so far lol

1

u/notiplayforfun Oct 21 '21

What? Why :P

1

u/paranormal_penguin Oct 21 '21

I used to get pressured into playing League of Legends and I can guarantee you it's not worth it. Your time is more valuable to waste doing something you thoroughly don't enjoy. I realized at a certain point that I really didn't enjoy playing League even when playing with friends so I just stopped and I have zero regrets.

When you start Dota2 you can prepare to get smacked the first 1000 hours when you didn't play a RTS like Starcraft, Warcraft on a high level before.

The steep learning curve is insane. And remember that Dota2 is mainly played by your mini map, not your actual screen. Good luck

Thank you kindly for the tips. I feel like I’ll forever be some kind of liability lol

1

u/Herbsen24 Oct 21 '21

What position do you play and how many heroes?

1

u/NoBanana9783 Oct 21 '21

Nooo! It’s not too late to give it up!

1

u/Disco_Fighter Oct 21 '21

Those who shift from League of Legends should have it easy I believe

5

u/Herbsen24 Oct 21 '21

No they won't. They just understand that a hero has spells and that you have to defeat the enemies ancient. Lane mechanics, matchups, micromanage, map information, pulls, dives, itemisation, neutral stacks, warding, lane pushing, night vision, ganking.

There are endless concepts you need to understand to get decent at it. I clock 5k hours in it and I'm just divine. Sure that's better than 90% of the playerbase, but in terms of an immortal player I'm still garbage and their smurfs stomp me into oblivion

u/IamCxrse Oct 21 '21

Surprising amount of similarities in terms to League of Legends. Im a League player and I dont wanna get into the argument once again of what is more difficult, complicated more fun or whatever.

6

u/Vlanoi Oct 21 '21

League player here, we just pick a champ and press Q so nexus go boom, no mechanics or strategy involved

3

u/RedFing Oct 21 '21

Also league player. Wish league had itemisations, lane mechanics, matchups, ganking and all the other concepts that fella above mentioned /s

-1

u/Herbsen24 Oct 21 '21

Can I deny creeps in lane?

Can I shift the lane equilibrium near my tower to farm safely?

Can I pull the creeps into the jungle to the neutral creeps?

Can I stack jungle creep camps?

2

u/VVaschbaer Oct 21 '21

Youre exaggerating so hard on this one... Its similar in many ways, just executed differently, id say getting into dota is a lot easier if you played league before than getting into it without having played other mobas or rts games.

2

u/DancingC0w Oct 21 '21

dota has a LOT of macro game that league doesn't have. League players will have an easier time with the micro game of course than someone who's never touched the game, but it won't be by any means easy

-10

u/Herbsen24 Oct 21 '21

It's not even the same genre. LOL is a MOBA, Dota is a RTS

1

u/VVaschbaer Oct 21 '21

How is it not a moba ? Valve even lists it as one on steam, despite that moba and rts are not that far away from each other since moba is an rts subgenre.

1

u/leonleonidis Oct 21 '21

I disagree! Both games are both.

1

u/Disco_Fighter Oct 21 '21

But I CAN see many similarities.

3

u/Catblaster5000 Oct 21 '21

Ganking is a pretty universal term.

5

u/Snoo61755 Oct 21 '21

I’ve taken to watching DotA more than playing it.

I love watching the smoke ganks, the traps, the mad dashes through the trees, the turnarounds - I hardly know any of the heroes, but it’s still fun, and I start to have favorites after awhile.

But playing it? Jesus, no! Last-hits, denies, stacking jungle creeps, it all looks so tedious, and that’s before factoring in multiplayer aspects like trolls and crappy team mates.

3

u/GankisKhan04 Oct 21 '21

Ganking is an art! Been doin it since 2004!

5

u/StickyGreens Oct 21 '21

Arem games in war craft 3 were the best

2

u/OmgOgan Oct 21 '21

I used to host these all the time on US West! AREM was my squads jam, best way to play imo

3

u/cor7ez3 Oct 21 '21

Are you sure about the date? Heard you were rocking it since the year 1200.

4

u/BuketzGaming Oct 21 '21

Haha yeah good luck with that mate.

Maybe some bot games, just to get use to a (non carry) toon to get ready for some public games.

MOBA's have an extremely steep learning curbs. Not just for learning 5he basics of the game but learning what all the toons do.

No game has made me rage or cheer harder then DOTA 2 (and especially HoN)

3

u/meteraider Oct 21 '21

Me still trying to figure out what Dota even stands for. I've seen the game and I know there is an actual title..Dead On The Arrival?

13

u/OmgOgan Oct 21 '21

Defense of the Ancients

The ancient is the thing you destroy in the center of the enemy base to win.

u/minev1128 Oct 21 '21 edited Oct 21 '21

Do you live in a place where Google doesn't exist?

-2

u/Anonymoushand Oct 21 '21

Defense of the Ancients iirc. It started out as a starcraft mod :)

6

u/Heartless_Kirby Oct 21 '21

If started as a warcraft 3 mod

4

u/FoxTactics Oct 21 '21

No he's right, the original concept was starcraft custom map called aeon of strife.

3

u/ITsLoverBoy Oct 21 '21

But that wasnt Dota.

Dota first came out in Warcraft 3 RoC

0

u/Heartless_Kirby Oct 21 '21

That was the inspiration, DotA started as an wc3 map

1

u/meteraider Oct 21 '21

Whoa, I don't remember that I SC. I used to play custom map "Golemz madness ULTRA!!" lol. And also some others where characters auto spawn and you take over other people's bases....wait a minute ..

2

u/AgeOfHades Oct 21 '21

The good ole days, where anything similar to dota was called an AoS before Moba was coined.

1

u/QuarkySisko Oct 21 '21

I tried playing with my friends for half an hour, never played those kinds of games before and they were instantly being salty and saying I'm trash so I just uninstalled it instantly, fuck that shit, plus the gameplay bores fuck out of me anyway.

2

u/Thord1n Oct 21 '21

Heh talked to a friend of mine who was an avid player and I remember being stunned at hearing him say that it was justified to report and flame someone who looked like he was new as opposed to actively trolling and being disruptive. To him being new was not acceptable. His reasoning was that they should do bot games until they can hang which in my experience would mean playing against bots for hundreds of hours.

1

u/Djkagamine Oct 21 '21

Hmmm definitely easier to pick up for those who have played RTS or ARPG games.

  • player of 6 months whose friends got me to play.

1

u/Triskadieka Oct 21 '21

You might want to party up with a couple of friends who aren't salty and are willing to teach you and try out bot games first.

The learning curve is insane and with the changing meta and patches you will need to adapt a lot.

Let us know if you want some help understanding the game, there are a lot of us here who can help you out.

1

u/Tim_Q Oct 21 '21

Nooo! It’s not too late to give it up!

1

u/Valaki997 PC Oct 21 '21

Teach me?
I was there when it was popular as a Warcraft 3 map !

1

u/CryonautX Oct 21 '21

Definitely play with friends. You'll learn better that way. Also stick to one of the roles and just focus on mastering that one role, could even stick to one hero.

I've been playing dota for a very long time like from back in the days of wc3 dota and it's great when u play with a group of 5 friends and a great way to bond. Not so great when played with pub allies who can be of questionable quality and too often detrimental to your team's chances of winning.

1

u/RezzerVersa Oct 21 '21

Try to stick with one character only and learn how to use its tools. There are some characters that are simple to play like Zeus, Bloodseeker, Wraith King, etc. try to start getting a grip on a simple character first in order for you to learn about the items of the game since its a game heavily decided by what items you decide to acquire during the game. Most of the times you can use a preferred build but DotA requires adaptation to the situation in a lot of cases so learning what use each item can have will be very helpful. There are also guides made by players that you can access inside the game itself that shows the order of which skills you wish to level up and what items generally are a good idea to buy and in what order.

Like many have spoken, bot games are a good way for you to practice, but bear in mind that players will play in a completely different way than those bots

My brother reinstalled the other day and exactly this XD

Gl and have fun!! People tend to forget that part

1

u/ixJax Oct 21 '21

I'm sorry for your loss

1

u/thatgreengentleman_ Oct 21 '21

I quit the game 4 years ago. The game was so toxic that it was affecting my psychological wellbeing. Quitting Dota2 was a great idea. I still play other video games but now I'm happier.

1

u/Myth2156 Oct 21 '21

Plot twist: You turn out to be an Omega smurf and have the whole match in your control already.

-12

u/Anayalater5963 Oct 21 '21

Wait if you haven’t seen it this is spoilers, does he know he’s going to die that’s why he’s in the corner? Because the next game was tug of war and I think he knew that
