Either 'Bro' or 'My Dude' that way all the NPCs are cool surfers

66

u/ShallowBasketcase Oct 21 '21

“I say,” makes everyone sounds like Foghorn Leghorn

21

u/d64 Oct 21 '21

Thanks, if I ever play another game with this player name mechanic, I will use that.

Too bad that due to voice acting, games don't refer to the player by their name anymore. It's just hey dragonborn, nephalem, exile, outlander, whatever.

7

u/LukinariCFD Oct 21 '21

Is that better or worse than when games say your name in the subtitles, but the VA still calls you traveler, wanderer etc.?

8

u/d64 Oct 21 '21

I don't really have a strong opinion, but I'm very old fashioned in this in general. Voice acting is great in cutscenes and many types of games (say it added a lot to Left for dead IMO), but in an rpg like Skyrim it also takes something away, since in practice it limits npc dialogue. If they had decided dialogue in say Morrowind would be all voice acted, there would have been wayy less text with the budget at the time, than there is in the game now. Plus this Foghorn Leghorn trick would not work.

Although my Shovel Knight play throughs I went for names like Sir Prise and Sir Spicious.

I used to play a lot of Zelda games and for some reason you could always name Link, which I found odd, so I always named him Link. I got used to doing that now I just name every character in every game Link.

32

u/ShallowBasketcase Oct 21 '21

I thought I was just naming the save file. Then NPCs started talking to Link using my name and that just felt wrong. Had to delete the save and replay the whole opening.

19

u/rydan Oct 21 '21

In Super Mario RPG the name of your savefile ends up being the password to some puzzle.

→ More replies

58

u/TomatoAcid Oct 21 '21

Lol why are you naming him Link.. he’s called Zelda. It’s in the game’s name.

22

u/rydan Oct 21 '21

If you name him Zelda in the original the game jumps immediately to the much more difficult 2nd Quest. I almost did this by accident but I didn't know how to spell Zelda so I didn't do it.

7

u/DANGERMAN50000 Oct 21 '21

I actually did this at 4(?) years old. Had to copy the name letter by letter from the cover.

Kept asking my mom where stuff was and it never made sense to either of us why our games were different until much, much later. Tried replaying the 2nd quest like ten years ago and that shit is ridiculous. Like, to beat the first or maybe second dungeon, you have to walk into a wall somewhere for like three straight seconds and there is no precedent for that at all. Basically impossible if you don't have a guide.

3

u/PKMNTrainerMark Oct 21 '21

I just go on Google translate and start converting random English words until I find something that sounds cool in Latin.

21

u/FreedTMG Oct 20 '21

I find a word in English to theme the character around, then try it in different languages til I find a good version.

9

u/arselkorv Oct 21 '21

When the game allows longer names with spaces and such, i always go for stuff like "Omg did you just fart?" and it makes every conversation hilarious!

-Hello, Omg did you just fart?

9

u/306bomberfan Oct 21 '21

I always go with a super common name that doesn't fit the world at all. For example, my new character in in diablo II is a barbarian named Jerry.

9

u/Youngestflexxer Oct 21 '21

This is why I always just used my name lol

38

u/Limp-Reaction-3131 Oct 20 '21

I fucking hate having to name my character. If they want to do that they should have a standard name that can be be changed if you want.

17

u/Viirax Oct 20 '21

Even worse is when you must have a name that's not used by anyone else yet, starting a second character is even worse then.

14

u/ShallowBasketcase Oct 21 '21

On the one hand, then you potentially run into problems like Mass Effect of Legend of Zelda where players can technically make their own character, but come on, it’s really just John Shepherd and Link, and we all know it.

On the other hand, Bethesda gives you some real half-assed default names like “Prisoner” or “Wanderer” that might as well not even be there at all.

4

u/EdwardM1230 Oct 21 '21

Yeah… just do it the FF way.

The unoriginal people can stick to Cloud, or change it to their own name.

And all the brilliant creatives out there, can follow the saga of I like Cum.

It is your destiny to save the world, my dude...

But yes I did spend an inordinate amount of time deliberating on my MC's name in DQ XI, and having learned they traditionally name them after the game number in advertising material (ie. Eleven), I named mine Lèven just... because it's slightly different than that, idk.

4

u/D34THDE1TY Oct 21 '21

Ever since I can remember I named my characters Death. Because that's what I bring and what happens to me.

5

u/rydan Oct 21 '21

Pro tip: Most games have a canonical name and will use that if you enter nothing. And some games have an easter egg if you do that.

3

u/p_mont293 Oct 21 '21

sigh.... the problem is when you get even more anxious about playing the game and cannot think for a decent username

3

u/happygunnerz Oct 21 '21

3

u/GrapeWedge20 Oct 21 '21

Even tho it takes a while for me to make a character, this really hits hard because alll of the creativity juices flow right into making said character.

I can't think of a name for the life of me most of the time after I'm all done with the character.

3

u/SuperSaiyan2589 Oct 21 '21

I remember a few years ago, there was a free game no Steam or a weekend that allowed for some robust character customization. I don't remember the game, but I spent something like 2-3 hours creating my character. Then I realized "wait, this is only free until tomorrow" so I just closed the game. Literally spent hours creating a character and never touched the game beyond the tutorial.

2

u/Aidan1470 Oct 21 '21

I like that Dragon Age always gives you a default name you can change if you want to. Feels better to have a name you know the devs decided would fit well in their world.

And then the character name is never used except for a save slot.
