So my old man is a rancher. He needed to give some antibiotics to this one bull that was pretty onery. He is a bow hunter so he decided to try a Medi dart, a syringe on an arrow on a special bow that lets you vax at range. So he pulls up behind the bull, aims, and fails to account for the weight of the arrow and it flies low. Low enough to hit the bull dead in the nut sack. He spent the rest of the day chasing a pissed of bull dragging an arrow from its nuts around the pasture to get his arrow back. It’s a story that will be passed down in my family for generations.

341

u/__T0MMY__ Oct 20 '21

I forgot the name for it, but "unconscious instinctive aiming" is what I'd call it where you do your best to NOT hit something and somehow hit it like you meant it

I feel like there might be a slight bit of that in this incident too lmao

Not saying it was intentional btw

238

u/Gruneun Oct 20 '21

Probably "target fixation"

I took a motorcycle safety class with a woman who was so worried about running into the instructors that she did it three times.

74

u/elogie423 Oct 20 '21

Would happen all the time in soccer. You shoot it directly at the goalie.

Difficult to train out of the habit.

43

u/Black_Moons Oct 20 '21

Yea cause you get bonus points if you manage to hit him in the face.

<disclaimer: I don't want sports, but maybe if I was allowed to make up the rules they would be more exciting to watch>

23

Scott Sterling truly is the man, the myth, the legend. He's one of the best goalies of all time. Every single shot that was taken, he blocked it - usually with his face.

2

u/Igor_J Oct 20 '21

That happened to me when I played youth league soccer. We had to do the wall thing to block the goal and the other player hit the kick the as hard as he could and the ball hit me in the face. It knocked me over. I was dizzy for a bit as well. Blocked the shot though.

My dad always told me to aim for where they currently are, because when you get there they will be gone. Mainly for speed skating in a group, but really works for anything where an accident is happening at speed.

Has helped in racing games for sure.

11

u/Gruneun Oct 20 '21

Target fixation works extremely well in motorcycle racing for maximizing speed in turns, as well. If you can train yourself to look at where you want to go, ignoring where you're currently pointed or how far you're leaning, you will lean the bike much further and your turns will be much better.

9

My first experience with this was getting hit with a baseball 15 feet to the side of the batter and the pitcher was flabbergasted at how he managed to throw it so badly

Took me like 10 years to find out that it's a thing

It is a hilarious story to razz someone about though tbh

3

u/Brunis_Pistol Oct 20 '21

Maybe "Target Fixation" is the term you are looking for? Comes up with new motorcyclists all the time, if you look at what you are trying to avoid most people will swerve into it. Also that gif of a toddler panicking when he sees a pile of poop and scrambling to avoid it but ends up waddling ten feet and faceplanting right in it

5

u/MRich92 Oct 20 '21

We had a gender reveal balloon and attached it to a target in the garden. It was about 3' across when inflated.

I shot it with my bow and I managed to pierce the balloon and hit the target dead-centre. Best shot I ever made and I wasn't even aiming for it.

(In case anyone was wondering. The balloon was filled with biodegradable confetti in a private garden.)

3

u/IdontGiveaFack Oct 20 '21

Oh so like golf for me. One tiny water hazard I have to avoid and my ball turns into a water-seeking missile.

Hopefully only castrates bulls and not himself.

6

u/ObiShaneKenobi Oct 20 '21

Had too many for that, so we would run them through the chute behind the barn. We had fun seeing who could throw the nuts the highest that would stick on the wall until they dried off or the birds ate them.

17

u/Kryz1te94 Oct 20 '21

I came here for this answer.

6

u/hotlavatube Oct 20 '21

My dad learned that lesson the hard way IRL.

Dad spent summers on a farm. One day he was out with his trusty bb-gun and saw a lazy bull in a field with those evil biting flies flying around it. Dad thought if he shot the bull that the bull would just think it was one of those flies biting it. Thus, dad took aim at the bull's ass. Unfortunately dad failed to account for bullet drop, and the bb didn't strike the bull's ass, but the bull's testicles. Ya know, until that day, my dad had never seen a bull do a 180 in air landing running before?

Dad bolted for the fence, but he knew he wouldn't make it over in time so he tossed his rifle over the fence and climbed the water tower ladder just in the nick of time. The angry bull stomped around the tower for hours before giving up. Eventually dad was able to escape.

That's from my collection of "times you almost were never born" stories.

I had tiny hope that they will get serious with this one (trailer was kinda serious), but then nnnnno exploding chickens crocodile pet cd thrower fuck everything once again guerilla. Would be cool if they made one dark toned game where you have a choice, like fighting IN the dictator's forces, eg as hired merc. Only real ending of FC4 came close, but it was so short. FC2 was kinda serious, but it desperately avoided putting you in favor of anyone, you had to play both sides.

2

u/-FeistyRabbitSauce- Oct 20 '21

FC2 was my favorite in the franchise (with Blood Dragon being a close second).

4

u/averm27 Oct 20 '21

Far cry 3 was also very realistic, even with it's magic, and voodoo.

It was gritty, dark at times, and also had it stupid fun (getting high on burning weed). But I think FC3 was the last good one.

Everything else has been derivative of that game.

My great grandfather emigrated from the homeland with only a sack of potatoes and a nickel bag. He got invited to play with the Decatur Staleys ( now the Chicago Bears ) after a pair of players saw him getting ready to sleep on the pitchers mound of the baseball field they began to practice in.

Family legend has it that some of the players of the Decatur Staleys, commissioned my great grandfather’s most recent wife to make the team the first NFL Football.

My great grandmother, inspired by my grandfather’s anatomy, and the surplus of “leather” donated by the team made the first NFL football made of GENUINE BALLSKIN.

12

u/themettaur Oct 20 '21

That's the thing. If you list out the flaws, or cherry-pick clips of them, it's easy to get others to completely write it off. But overall, it's still a pretty fun game almost perfectly in line with the rest of the franchise.

u/TinyterrorINC Oct 20 '21

3

u/NoSleepReader Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 20 '21

Would you recommend the game to someone who’s never played the franchise? Is there anything it can be compared to as a similar type of game?

I’m looking for something new to play on PS5. Can only play TLOU2 so many times.

Edit: should mention story is the number one most important thing for me in a video game.

2

u/themettaur Oct 20 '21 edited Oct 20 '21

Hmmmm... Yeah, I think I would. I am definitely biased, though. The Far Cry series has never been the best games ever made, but I have enjoyed them for like a decade now.

I enjoy the story of the game so far (haven't beat it just yet, I'm a little more than 70% through), but even though it's well done for what it is, the story is kind of backseat to the gameplay in this one. There are plenty of cutscenes, but they're all very short or feel like they end abruptly. The gameplay is a bit too standard to really immerse you in the story most of the time. Like, there's a little bit of variation but for the most part, you are always running and gunning, or just shooting. There aren't real choices to make, probably not until the very end of the game, and missions really do start to feel samey after a short time. However, the franchise stepped back into more heavy characterization. There are a lot of NPCs, and you get a decent amount of dialogue from them, both in cutscenes and in random calls your character will make, as well as side quests.

As far as the gameplay, it is really a very standard FPS. I would compare it most to a first person Just Cause, or a less deep GTA. The franchise keeps dancing with RPG elements, though, with unlockable skills/equipment and a ranking system that increases as you finish objectives that will grant access to new things at stores. I'd recommend looking up a gameplay video and just avoiding cutscenes to get a better idea of what it's like.

If you care about story, make sure you get God of War if you don't have it, and definitely consider Horizon: Zero Dawn. The story of GoW is incredibly well done and engaging, and Horizon has some faults and shallowness but is overall a nice rollercoaster of fun and despair wrapped into one.

2

u/NoSleepReader Oct 20 '21

Thanks for the write up I appreciate it. I’ll check some gameplay videos.

And yes both GoW and HZD are some of my favorite games out there. Very excited for the sequels to both!

Real question: does FC6 do anything new or have a new hook to it? The only news that made it to me was a chihuahua and cock fighting

I enjoy open world Ubisoft games enough to buy them for $20 on sale and finish them in a weekend, I’ve enjoyed all the farcry games especially primal and whatever the last post-FC5 was called with the base building and stuff

If you have a friend to enjoy the game with or you enjoyed the previous games, I'd say it's super worth a buy. If it's less your thing, I'd say waiting for a sale is fine. It's a solid game that I have been enjoying quite a bit more than I expected.

If you love open world Ubisoft, this game is phenomenal. It was a day one buy for me because I love Farcry games… but if it’s not 100% your thing definitely wait for the Christmas Boxing Day sales or something and get a deal on it. I’m having a blast with it. It feels a lot more like Farcry 3 to me than 4 or 5… if you enjoyed Farcry New Dawn (the one you mentioned with base building) you’ll love this one. They took all the mechanics from that game and expanded on it. You can customize your vehicle, bases, you can even choose skins for your horse and side kicks

I have played literally every far cry except new dawn. This new one is my favorite. Instead of leveling up a skill tree slowly as you play the game, all the boosts and abilities from the skill tree are with you from the start. Now as you level you get new gear with perks that let you dial in the gameplay to fit your style. You also can craft backpacks now that all have different ultimate abilities like an EMP blast, rocket barrage, self revive etc. There are also a lot of fun guns you can find around the map in chests or craft at workbench. My only complaint is that the AI are kinda dumb so if you like playing stealth it will be extremely easy to go undetected cuz the gaurds are a little slow

I found it derivative and soulless. Same old game, new skin and new boring story.

Is anyone else disappointed by this installment?

2

u/Arbie-Ess Oct 20 '21

Hugely. I love Farcry, even though I agree with many criticisms I see pointed at the series. This one is a massive disappointment, and I feel like I’m taking crazy pills when I see people calling it ‘best in the series’ etc. (not trying to rag on anyone for enjoying it though)

The addition of ammo types adds nothing to the gameplay except tedious menuing, and the atrocious respawn rate of the enemies makes killing anyone feel legitimately pointless. Imagine that. A Farcry game where I can’t even be bothered shooting the enemies. I also don’t feel any incentive to actually do anything. I don’t care about any rewards I get for doing things, so why am I doing it?

Can’t believe how much of a step backwards this is from 5. At least Farcry used to have an identity of some kind, even if it was somewhat stale. At least it was a sandbox to play in. Now this its just Tom Clancy’s Watchdogs Creed 6: Wildlands. Literally Ubisoft: The Game.

Yeah, they took away so much that made the series great and added the "tedious menuing". I'm glad i'm not the only one that bothered. I had to stop before each mission and change my armor and ammo types for each enemy. Idk what the plan was there but i feel like it's a huge miss.

Lol they saw everyone losing their minds about rdr2 horse balls and they made sure to add big ol' bull balls

2

u/Zediscious Oct 20 '21

have you noticed how broken that gun is? I'm not sure you need any other gun in the game. The gun play in this game is pretty wonkey, I'd say. I can headshot npc's from too far away with pistols, range doesn't seem to really effect them.

u/B34TBOXX5 Oct 20 '21

Right?? That’s why I can’t stop using it haha I genuinely want to use other sidearms but I always go back to this pistol. It hits harder than the shotguns and can snipe headshots at long range

I’ve seen bad reviews Like gaming developers are lazy now days

u/CodingLazily Oct 20 '21

I wouldn't call it lazy. You work for a big company, they tell you to go make another Far Cry game. You're sick of making them. You have an interest in RPGs and you've wanted to make one for a while, but even if the company told you to make an RPG, it's not your project. You're just told to work on the inventory system.

There's no passion and we can't expect there to be. This is why smaller developers and especially independently published developers do better, where everyone has a little more say in what happens with the project and they hire people with an interest in the project instead of just seasoned devs.

Good call good call I agree with you

I would not call Far cry 6 a lazy game in any meaning of the word...its a same old far cry game? Yes, repetitive? Yes but it's not a lazy game... Its not even a case like fallout 4 and fallout 76... Farcry 6 looks completely different from 5... You can see the devs put in work in the game... Its a gorgeous looking game but at the end of the day it's the higher ups who decide what game they want to be made but the devs did a great job with what they were given

Its the worst looking AAA game this year

Really? With PS1 style graphic glitches in the pause menu AND the gun models? This game is crap, and I've religiously played all the Far Cry games.
