It'd be nice if they let us hit the shop right away, at least have something to do while waiting.

EDIT: This has become my highest voted comment of all time, AND my first SrGrafo edit-worthy comment. Thanks everyone!

Literally this. Waiting for people because they're customizing or in the shop is far worse than any cutscene.

68

u/ess_tee_you 7d ago

Two people in my GTA crew would make the others wait while they picked their fucking clothes or whatever. Then they'd spend the heist in a vehicle or somewhere that it made no difference.

Just ready up!

It might be the load times are a lot longer? Idk what it is either. Me and my buddy played just fine (I'm on PC, he's on Xbox one) but playing with randoms is incredibly slow for some reason.

Yes. So painfully dumb that I gotta wait for a guy to shuffle through all his cards before I can buy stuff. Followed by that same player immediately running out the door when they are ready.

We all hate this, but I would wager the reason is so some rando doesn't start the run before the laggers get done picking their 18 draw deck because they just backfilled a bot.

292

u/NetLibrarian 7d ago

The store is in the saferoom. There's no reason not to let players at it right away.

The only thing that can be bought so it's 'out of stock' is the team buffs, and the latecomer gets the full benefit of that without having to spend a copper.

There's literally no downside for anyone to just have the shop be open.

The door can stay locked until everyone is ready, of course.

101

u/Rohthekem PC 7d ago

its to stop one person tell everybody whats in the shop and then rest of them picking cards that will utilize those items better.
Im guessing of course

Adding a strategic element so people optimize their gameplay while also eliminating a boring wait period? Definitely can’t have that.

u/PrinceBatCat 7d ago

Access to everything, need to pay for the most recent expansion though. There's a $13 starter sub which limits you to one character per server, max of 8 or so characters. Which is perfectly fine since one character can do anything and everything. Standard sub is $15 a month and allows for more characters.

Other than fashion stuff, some premium mounts, and character customizing potions, each retainer (basically like 6 or 7 tabs of bank space) you want past the two you start with raises your monthly sub. That's not necessary unless you really want to hoard stuff or enjoy doing ventures (basically sending the NPC to go gather shit and come back in like 6 hours).

Edit- oh and you choose when to sub. You can reach 60 in everything before you pay anything.

u/SrGrafo PC 7d ago

u/Galanodel2012 7d ago

Yeah, honestly FFXIV has some of the least predatory practices I've seen in a modern MMO, even if their store interface is hot garbage from the early 2000s.

They essentially give you a solid 60 hours of gameplay for free, just to see if you like it, and the only real restrictions are economy based.

As a year old convert myself, I don't know if I'll ever be able to go back to an MMO with a standard job system. I love being able to queue into a dungeon as a DPS, see the wait will be too long, press a button to change to a tank/healer and put on all my gear, and requeue for an instant in, all without changing characters.

66

u/GainsayRT 7d ago

Might actually try it myself simply because ''FFXIV has some of the least predatory practices I've seen in a modern MMO''. So many games nowadays openly trying to scam you seeing a game that doesn't do this, to an extend at least, is very provoking

I don't know if I'll ever be able to go back to an MMO with a standard job system.

Same man, that totally spoiled other MMO's for me. If your not enjoying a class, you don't have to abandon you character that you are so invested in. That was such a game changer to me, now when I think about trying a new MMO that fact that I cant on those is a turn off now

More than that. Base game alone will take you 60 hours at a casual pace and that's just for the main story and one class. There's hundreds of hours in the free trial.

Not to mention it adds more life to old dungeons since players will keep coming back leveling up new classes/experiencing the fight from a different pov.

Ugh I broke my streak of playing as soon as I finished ShB and this thread makes me want to go back... My first FC I built with a random guy got pretty big and it was the most fun I've ever had in a game (over the course of nearly two years) but then usual drama happened and anytime I resubscribe even though some of those friends still play it feels melancholy for me now.

Sorry for the rant, it does actually make me sad but it's not something you'd exactly talk about irl without it seeming weird also Xanax lol. I might come back for the new expac since some of them said they would too, so I'm hopeful.

We've accepted FF14 is RPG with multiplayer aspect (dungeons/parties)

Free trial can easily last you hundreds of hours.

Do keep in mind the story isn't exactly stellar for the first 30ish levels or so, but 50-60 story is pretty tear jerking.

Unfortunately, the biggest boss is setting up accounts and downloads.

78

u/Elvaron 7d ago

Count yourself lucky if you didn't have to deal with that account/character creation shit for FF11... 14 is trivial in comparison.

The devs are officially on record as being ok with - if not even encouraging - players dropping off their subscription if they've completed everything in the game they are currently interested in and waiting till new patches/expansions come out. And there's no FOMO mechanics other than the typical holiday/crossover events that would make you feel like you have to keep playing to stay relevant. It's honestly almost the exact opposite of P2W - the most you can do is buy extra retainers for more 'bank' space and 'auction house' listings if you really want to get into the market part of the experience. And that's complete overkill for most players.

EDIT: There's also story and level skips you can buy, but those are generally highly advised against by the community unless you are honestly only interested in the end-game raiding experience and nothing else. The story takes a bit to grow its beard, but it's very, very worth it if you are at all interested in story and narrative in your games.

Yoshi-P and his team's strategy seems to be to make a good and fair game first and assume the profits will follow - and it's working, because it was just announced that FFXIV is now the most profitable game in the franchise.

5

u/LJP2093 7d ago

I only recommend character skips for the sole purpose of using the class you want to use for the story.

I boosted a DRG to 70 so that I could use a SAM for the entirety of the game. And I had a fucking blast doing it.

Still got the entirety of the story (big FF fan so that was a must), but was able to use the class I wanted to, instead of something I didn’t want to until 50

Yes, one of us, one of us! For real though, don't let the cash shop comments turn you off. Most of the items in it are items other servers developed and paid for, because Square has some weird agreement with the Chinese publisher or whoever. So to bring it over to the other servers, it's gotta be in the pay shop.

The mogstation's also paid for a lot of side content directly, and while I'm the first to usually decry really shitty games like Destiny and Guild Wars 2 that shove all of their cosmetic goodies and so on in the cash shops, I can't say FFXIV's ever felt overbearing with it in the 9 years since 2.0 came out.

Also, remember it's a Final Fantasy game, don't treat it like an MMO and rush the endgame! Sit back, enjoy the ride, and savor the story!

New expansion comes out end of November, so whenever you do get into it, you’ll have an absolute ton of stuff to do. First main story is kinda slow at first, but by the end of that and the start of the CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED HEAVENSWARD EXPANSION it gets really fricken good

You can level ALL classes that come with the base game and the first expansion to 60. Including crafters and gatherers.

You’re locked out of a few key features like making parties and using the marketplace, but for the most part it’s an awesome experience that can easily bet you over 400 hours if you’re going to do everything.

4

u/MoralltachtheHero 7d ago

So you gotta buy the game and expansions (cheaaap like $20-40 on sale) and then $13+bonuses (extra chars, retainers. etc) a month. Free Trial covers base game and Heavensward(aka lotta fuckin content) and all classes in both to 60. No guilds, friends list, market board, or trading though.

Yea, but it's only $12 a month if you go for the 1 character option.

You really only need 1 character though

It's 1 character per server.

Cheaper to buy 12 month with the discount as the $12 one must be renewed monthly. No bulk option.

New player here: free trial gives you access to main story up to lvl 60 and leveling any available classes to lvl 60 (by any means). Main story gives bulk of xp, huge amounts, enough so far to maintain two classes leveled at the same time.

Class switching takes a button press.

Downsides are inability to friend or party (can still use automated matchmaking for dungeons though so it's not bad and you can be invited by paying players) and use the market to trade with other players. Perfect for a bitesized experience due to nature of the questing system, if yiu don't feel like it after hard day can go fish or whatever.

Big plus so far had been community, honestly, I didn't think such wholesome places still existed on the Internet.

8

u/kmn493 7d ago

Just a warning, if you ever buy the subscription, you CAN'T return to f2p. You're completely locked out of your account until you pay again.

121

u/WifeofTech 7d ago

Ugh Monster Hunter World. A 4 player co-op game but each player must individually watch the cut scene before leaving the mission so they can approach the battle as a team.

Love that game but that was so incredibly frustrating. Let's do this mission. Oh wait it has a cut scene. Brb going to watch the cut scene and then abort the mission so we all can play together.

30

u/ecntv 7d ago

Was my first Monster Hunter game, between all the launch issues and that cutscene thing basically stopped playing the game with friends because it was so tedious doing that every time. Then stopped playing cause I bought it for the coop.

35

u/Confuzet 7d ago

The cutscene thing in MHW is an insanely bad design choice, blows my mind. I did stick with the game, thankfully there's like infinite endgame without the cutscene bullshit but damn does the game try to make you quit.

7

u/Keara_Fevhn 7d ago

Monster hunter rise handled cutscenes a bit better—it just makes everyone watch them if one person hasn’t seen it yet. Only on the switch though so that kinda limits it for some people

Tell me. For whom do you fight?

Hmph! How very glib. And do you believe in Eorzea? Eorzea's unity is forged of falsehoods. Its city-states are built on deceit. And its faith is an instrument of deception.

It is naught but a cobweb of lies. To believe in Eorzea is to believe in nothing. In Eorzea, the beast tribes often summon gods to fight in their stead--though your comrades only rarely respond in kind. Which is strange, is it not?

Are the "Twelve" otherwise engaged? I was given to understand they were your protectors. If you truly believe them your guardians, why do you not repeat the trick that served you so well at Carteneau, and call them down? They will answer--so long as you lavish them with crystals and gorge them on aether. Your gods are no different than those of the beasts--eikons every one. Accept but this, and you will see how Eorzea's faith is bleeding the land dry.

Nor is this unknown to your masters. Which prompts the question: Why do they cling to these false deities? What drives even men of learning--even the great Louisoix--to grovel at their feet? The answer? Your masters lack the strength to do otherwise! For the world of man to mean anything, man must own the world. To this end, he hath fought ever to raise himself through conflict--to grow rich through conquest. And when the dust of battle settles, is it ever the strong who dictate the fate of the weak.

Knowing this, but a single path is open to the impotent ruler--that of false worship. A path which leads to enervation and death. Only a man of power can rightly steer the course of civilization. And in this land of creeping mendacity, that one truth will prove its salvation.

Come, champion of Eorzea, face me! Your defeat shall serve as proof of my readiness to rule! It is only right that I should take your realm. For none among you has the power to stop me!

At least in MH:W other people can do something while they wait for the host to get through the story cinematics. The only thing I'd complain about is stuff like KT where the intro cinematic plays every damn time you go after it.

9

u/Acousticman77 7d ago

Yeah. It was just annoying that you couldn’t just play straight through all quests with some one else. You’d have to go enter your quest, watch the cut scene, then back out and join their quest after they watched it. Was such a strange decision design wise.

→ More replies

15

u/fredemu D20 7d ago

MH:W's system is at least a bit better.

You have to have watched the cutscene before you can do the quest in multiplayer.

It's only kinda annoying if you're playing in a set group (everyone goes off on their own to watch the cutscene, then everybody joins back up to fight the monster). If you're playing with randoms, everyone who joins the hunt is guaranteed to have already watched the cutscene.

Back 4 Blood would work well with that; basically, you watch the cutscene, then you queue. If you're playing with a group of friends, then everybody's watching the cutscenes together anyway.

u/Akiias 7d ago

OH god, I can't imagine doing Praetorium without sprinting through everything.

Warframe did it but they were very short so it was totally bearable

30

u/WillDeletOneDay 7d ago

They are short and they are also skipped if anyone in the group presses a button. Warframe players speedrun every mission and always instantly spam the skip button even if the cutscene is literally 5 seconds long. You will never actually see those cutscenes if you play in pubs.

17

u/TheUnderwaterArbiter 7d ago

Unless it has that pain in the ass glitch where it won’t let you skip so you get really far behind the group

12

u/IrrelevantLeprechaun 7d ago

Grouping up with pugs in Warframe is pointless unless you want to grind high level defense missions.

Otherwise the other 3 people will just bullet jump to the objective within 15 seconds and be harassing you to get to the extraction zone while you were barely getting your bearings at the starting area.

I don’t get half this thread. The game is there to be enjoyed by everyone. If you’re crying at a guy actually being entertained at the video game, you need a long hard look at yourself and wonder why you’re playing the game in the first place.

Have they rebalance the card system yet? That was my biggest problem with it last time I played.

I feel like using Magic cards is cheating, equivalent to using God Mode.

Im really enjoying it. The strange thing is on pc the aiming feels great. Feels a little off on console.

Change deadzone settings for each stick to 0,1 (it's 0,2 on default)

Um, adding cinematics is the BEST thing. Speaking for my friends who never read anything and are totally lost every time we play a new game. Without the cinematics, they won't have a damn clue what anything is. And no, they won't Google it.

Hey I liked the b4b cinematics. Y'all can wait.

I love the Monster Hunter series, but World was SO bad about this. While my buddy was progressing through the story, it was always "hold on I can't join you yet, there must be a cutscene."

I really thought I'd be hyped for this game but I played the beta shortly before release and found it really boring and repetitive and stopped playing after an hour. I don't think it's really a flaw with the game I think I've just changed as a gamer since the Left 4 Dead days. I guess our tastes change and what we remember as great at the time doesn't necessarily work for us anymore.

Is the game worth it?

I see all my friends playing, but none of them give me a good reason to buy, so someone give me a good reason to buy this game!

If someone convinces me I'll a draw pineapple.

14

u/Inferna14 7d ago

you should try it through Xbox Games Pass! It's only a $15 investment at most, and if you're lucky, you might join at a time they offer it for $1 for the month. That's how I'm going through the game right now. It's not worth $60, but it's still a very fun game so far for me!

6

u/VisualBasic 7d ago

My reason for playing is that's it's part of Xbox Game Pass and didn't cost anything extra. I wouldn't pay full price for it unless the reviews end up being excellent.

16

u/dyonnkk 7d ago

Worth 60$? That depends on how much 60$ means to you I guess.
But worth your time to play? Definitely.. with a group. Solo is meh, matchmaking is pretty good (oddly BETTER with crossplay disabled) but off hours I've had to deal with a bot or two and they're both a handicap and gamebreakingly OP at the same time. They will sometimes tag monsters through a wall, never cause friendly fire damage, and give hints a bit too quickly for my liking. But they also will take the long way around to come save you, or run away because an exploding zombie is nearby. Overall the bots are a HUGE improvement over L4D1/2 but that's not a very high bar.

The card system is confusing as hell at first but once it clicks (after 1-2 play throughs) usually people understand it and are having fun making their own decks for the way they want to play. That said, while you can PICK cards reactively you need to have them in your hand already so there is a lot of 'what if' to building a deck. As an example I made an entire deck around 'precision kill streaks' which is SUPER powerful if you're a good shot but on a playthrough over the weekend the FIRST card the AI drew was armored weak spots rendering half my deck useless as kill streaks were too hard to maintain (for me at least). But that's part of the fun! lesson learned, I took the risk with an OP deck and got screwed on the flop. That's why I love Texas hold'em and it's what makes this game a replayable beast.

The gameplay is SOLID, some of the best/most satisfying gunplay in recent years (CoD etc have become wayyyy too cartoony feeling IMO). The gun sound design (and just sound design in general) is incredible. There are truly scary/creepy moments, interspersed with 'acceptable' levels of humor; think L4D "son we just crossed the street"-style dry humor. Overall the game is lighter hearted than L4D as the protagonists are aware of what's going on and the world is already past the "OhEMGEE becky there are ZAMBIS" stage.
Boss fights are challenging and rewarding but are not as varied as other aspects. IE: once you've done a boss fight you'll know how to fight it as it's one of the few things that doesn't change from playthrough to playthrough. Oh, and the difficulties are sooo far apart that going from easy->normal is a HUGE change. On easy my team won't go down once the entire 4 acts, but on normal we're limping and half dead the entire time. I've yet to try nightmare but I hear it gives pros a good challenge which is nice to look forward to.

Hope this helps
