First time used on the usa soil was in Pittsburgh Durring the G4 protests back when I was in high school in the early 2000s

u/PuppidVelids Oct 13 '21

Yup and we got to see it on whale wars around the same time..I think,I dunno, that era is a bit fuzzy for me.

16

u/Alpha_Lantern Oct 13 '21

Very close in time frame

u/naturalbornkillerz Oct 14 '21

I loved whale wars. Orca 1 kanobe was my favorite

G20 in 2009. Yes. she is right Run.

I (still) live on the protest route that these were used and the cops who were using them were absolute cunts.

They were pointing the LRAD (it was on an armored vehicle) at people who were sitting on their porch watching the protest (much older people) and would just let it blast them for 5-10 seconds.

And the protest was peaceful until the cops got bored and began firing tear gas at a bunch of protestors who were sitting on the street. They followed the protestors to University of Pittsburgh's campus then started arresting students who were not involved in the protests on campus grounds and began chasing and kettling and arresting students.

48

u/boothapalooza Oct 13 '21

I remember some people rolling a dumpster at the police when they were trying to kettle protestors

45

u/BackmarkerLife Oct 14 '21

I remember hearing about that, but didn't see it. I was just trying to take photos of everything, but when the tear gas hit ~35th, I ducked into a bar with a few others - I was not prepared to deal with that. Then I made my way up to Bloomfield where a handful of people were tending to others because they had been shot with rubber bullets / bean bags and had some nasty bruising and one had a huge open wound on her elbow. We walked her down to a hospital a few blocks away.

The only damage I saw was a PNC bank ATMs had been destroyed. Nothing else was touched so I just found a few friends since it was also the start of Little Italy Days.

The police (some of the out of state chads) were also chasing Pitt students into the Towers Dorm Lobby as well. They didn't go into the lobby thankfully, but they did arrest a student who was holding the door open for other students running in.

If the police can break up protests, use weapons to disperse and silence the protest, and arrest protesters, then you don’t actually have the right to protest.

And that’s not even mentioning how the police can do drive by shootings and kidnap people in unmarked vans. Your “rights” aren’t respected, therefore you don’t have any.

36

u/MrRed-5 Oct 14 '21

I'm honestly surprised more cops are not attacked or shot at from provoking these attacks on innocent people

33

u/BackmarkerLife Oct 14 '21

I am too somewhat. But the more enlightened non-cops know that one dead cop will just turn to slaughter with dead civilians.

13

u/SmileLikeAphexTwin Oct 14 '21

That's almost what happened when that army vet shot back at the riot police in Minneapolis and they proceed to beat the shit out him for surrendering afterwards. There's footage of proud boys doing the exact same drive by bs as the cops yet the 2A "ammosexuals" aren't doing a damn thing about it.

2

u/BackmarkerLife Oct 15 '21

I've had a few comments in my history about just that man and that incident from my perspective. Scary as hell.

Cops in an unmarked van tell black and whites to hangback. They knew exactly the response they wanted.

I can only imagine if the Army vet had killed one of them. Would this footage have been buried? etc. I don't want anyone to die, even if they are human shiteaters.

7

u/stmfreak Oct 14 '21

Because most people try to be rational. If you are going to shoot at cops, you are committing yourself to a very short life of violence or a long life of incarceration.

Most of us would prefer a long life of freedom.

5

u/MrRed-5 Oct 14 '21

I completely agree but not everyone has that mindset, which is why I'm surprised.

13

u/chaobreaker Oct 14 '21

Because most of the people with a prediposition for violence just join the police instead.

3

u/Open_Chemistry_3300 Oct 14 '21

USA police are Notorious for fucking up people who fuck up cops, hell sometimes they fuck up random people who don’t even have shit to do with the situation at all. Like the Christopher Dorner shootings and manhunt of 13. In three separate incidents in the early morning hours of February 7, 2013, police fired on people who turned out to be unrelated to Dorner. Dorner was not present at any of the incidents.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Dorner_shootings_and_manhunt

6

u/Option-Lazy Oct 14 '21

pretty much describes every major protest i've ever attended...

33

u/Epistatious Oct 14 '21

Whenever you see a cool military non lethal weapon being bragged about in tech journals, expect it to be used on american civilians soon. Strangely only at unarmed protests. Never roll these things out for proud boys or militias.

A full power LRAD isn't just about your ears. It's powerful enough to vibrate you gas filled organs and cause extreme discomfort. Similar effects to if you were swimming infornt of a sperm whale and getting hit by sonar clicks. A sperm whale can heat a divers body from the intense vibrations. Now this is 230db underwater where the most powerful LRAD is like 170db. That's a sustained tone louder than a single shotgun blast. The impact to your body is also about pressure and frequency of the tone. This is what causes the uncomfortable vibrations.

If earplugs allow you to remain in the path of the sound within ~100 yards the LRAD isn't on full power. You will protect yourself against possible eardrum perforation but it still won't be somewhere you want to be.

It's also extremely directional. Two people 10 to 15ft apart would experience vastly different severity. This dispersion changes with your proximity to the device. But the cone of sound is designed to be directional and pointed vs a flood of overall volume.

Source: Operated LRAD in USMC. Never used against people. Used to broadcast information throughout a city from a central location.

65

u/toxcrusadr Oct 14 '21

As an audio enthusiast, I'm interested to know what frequencies are used and how the damn thing can put out that kind of acoustic power when it's so small. Can you share more technical details?

52

u/HumbleChallenge Oct 14 '21 edited Oct 14 '21

The device in OP's video is not something I'm familiar with. I used the large white disk or octagon version. If you remove the cover you'll see dozens of small speakers about the circumference of the bottom a soda can. This is how it achieves the directional capabilities. The speakers direct the sound the way a magnifying glass directs a beam of light. Each speaker is aimed to generate the cone. You can play the 'squeal' or 'chirp' tone or a verbal message. I've seen plenty of videos of protests v. civilian law enforcement and I haven't come across the exact model I used. Most are much smaller than what we had.

Here is the datasheet PDF of what I used, I used the system over a decade ago so this is a newer model. I'm not sure how the specs have changed but I'm guessing they haven't become less powerful...

https://genasys.com/wpcontent/uploads/Datasheet_LRAD_1000Xi_2020.pdf

Edit: PDF link didn't work for me but the model is the 1000Xi from Genasys:

Sooooo, can it make the Brown Noise?

6

u/TheNoisyNomad Oct 14 '21

No. The brown note is a low frequency. These are designed for high frequencies because it doesn’t take as much power to produce higher frequencies. So you won’t leak brown out your butt, but at over 150 db you may leak red from your ears.

So on Twitter to get a viral tweet you can use a viral hashtag or a word that's viral.

On tik tok it's sound. So people will use sounds and then turn them really low to get on the "tag" for that sound

Surefire brand are inserts that work really well. I use those and sometimes I put the muffs on when I'm at the range.

I haven't noticed much of a difference in the expensive muffs vs the 40-50 dollars ones. But when I do the combo, I can't hear shit.

Edit: I didn't notice but the second picture are those silicone ear plugs, they're way better than that foam shit.

19

u/comfty_numb Oct 13 '21 edited Oct 14 '21

I double up as well. The passthru mic on my muffs makes conversation doable, but the bangs get considerably quieter. I kinda have to, because the muff seal doesn't play terribly well with my glasses unless its warm out. But instead of full earplugs, I use a bud-to-bud wired bluetooth headset with foam tips, so I dont know what my actual db reduction is. But it gets the job done for sure.

Edit: Foam tips in question. They isolate well enough on their own, however, fit may be a consideration. When it comes to the range, I don't care to be completely isolated so that if a situation arises, I still maintain some awareness.

3

u/OKRollForInitiative Oct 13 '21

Love my surefires. Been using them for years at the range. Highly recommend.

2

u/calvin840 Oct 14 '21

The main difference in the expensive ones is gonna be the quality of audio. Going from walkers to peltors was an amazing jump

She had me until this. She is protesting the administration of the so-called "most progressive president in history" and there's a military device pointed at her. This is where libs fail. They see all this and think "ah, the normal process will work. I shall tell my representative about this!"

Lady, unless you're a pharma lobbyist or something they won't even see you or read your email.

2

u/JustyThePrimeMusty Oct 14 '21

Liberals are really just a bunch of frustratingly naive children, and I say that as a leftist. Like, at the end, instead of giving us some useless advice like "talk to your reps!!1" she could have told us more countermeasures, like using something concave pointed at the device (like a stolen riot shield!) to redirect the effect back to the operator. Hell, anything that'll actually disrupt the moving gears of state oppression in any kind of small way.

Talk to your reps lol that's rich, I'm sure they'll listen to some silly bitch in university who knows lots of nice words and has exactly zero dollars to contribute to their next campaign. All the protesting in the world isn't going to change shit, kids. It's the one step past that that gets things done.

does anyone else have complete protest burnout in this country? Like we get it you're upset and want change that will never come because we are just manipulated for votes can we move on now?

Change is possible, it just isn't going to happen at the federal level no matter how many bills Congress passes or Executive Orders are issued because the amount of control the federal government has over local and state law enforcement agencies is minimal.

Tell that to the people who marched in the Civil Rights Movement. Seemed to work alright for them.

And all violent "protest" does is create backlash in public opinion. I marched with a BLM protest last summer. Police brutality is a problem. But I have a hard time feeling sympathetic towards people who are smashing storefront windows and shit.

15 years later:

"peaceful Protester" : YOU CANT USE NERF GUNS ON US! THEY COULD LEAD TO CORNIEL ABRASSSSSSIUUUNNZZ!!11!

2

u/unclebruce2 Oct 13 '21

Not exactly a freakout

2

u/realbatman88 Oct 14 '21

Police used these on peaceful protestors at the white house but not on the douche bags calling to overthrow the govt while armed with rifles in Michigan. Point being, the left needs to arm itself

2

u/Known-Ad290 Oct 14 '21

Another tactic is to destroy your ears by listening to Daft Punk at full blast because it’s amazing. Then the noise machine can’t even touch you.

2

u/el-cuko Oct 13 '21

Riot police were using these hoes in Colombia to their hearts’ content this spring . Among other “less than lethal” cuntery

There's no compelling counter argument to your stupid-ass rhetoric. Now, as I said, go back to licking boots.

So, what did the police deploy this past weekend with MAGA protestors?

4

u/eeyore134 Oct 13 '21

From what I've seen at previous MAGA events, they handed out bottles of water and fist bumps. Maybe some selfies. If you're lucky, maybe some tactical information on another group of protesters nearby with differing opinions.

u/AntPrudent7424 Oct 13 '21

That’s without a doubt the smallest pocket sized LRAD I’ve ever seen. Must run on double A’s. It’s placement and proximity to the crowd means maybe 3 people will hear it. They also have these things called volume controls. They can also be used as loud speakers/PA systems. It’s funny, because I’m sure she wouldn’t complain standing in front of the main stage speakers at a concert.

6

u/eeyore134 Oct 13 '21

Yes, I'm sure the police will show restraint when employing it! I mean, look at how restrained they were with the rubber bullets to people's faces, and the gas cannisters to people's faces, and the multiple taser hits to people laying on their faces... they're super careful with their toys.

3

u/BackmarkerLife Oct 13 '21

They won't. They used it on people sitting on their porches watching the G20 protests back in 2009.

1

u/fizzysnork Oct 14 '21

If that's a freakout, it's a polite and rational freakout.

-15

u/_Gorgix_ Oct 13 '21

It's actually a form of non-lethal crowd control. They could use lethal means if you'd like?

Also find a fucking dentist, 30 y/o has lower teeth like Stitch...

2

u/BenjaminPeppino Oct 13 '21

Republicans are disgusting . Shut up

-4

u/_Gorgix_ Oct 13 '21

u/BenjaminPeppino Oct 13 '21
