Have you tried sending mail to our billing agency? No that's the HQ billing, we use a separate third-party billing agency for members. Its independent. Remember it has to be certified mail and they are only open the 5th Tuesday of even months.

Ya know what, why don't we just "freeze" your membership for 2 months instead. Its a small fee and I can do it right here.

20

u/57hz Aug 17 '21

No joke, when the Khmer Rouge first reached The Cambodian capital city, they drank out of the toilets, because they had never seen a flush toilet before.. this has similar vibes

323

u/lanekeast Aug 17 '21

Even though the sink was one foot away, almost every toilet they found.....yikea

215

u/inbooth Aug 17 '21

Well... Let's look at it how they would:

The sink is empty and water only comes after taps are turned.

The toilet has visible fresh water.

For those used to wells and rivers, the toilet seemed like the appropriate source for water. They would have used it before testing taps, mostly like at least as they'd have been fighting before occupying the property and would need water.

It actually makes a lot of sense for it to initially happen. Its only wierd if they kept doing it after learning about the sinks having running water.

116

u/[deleted] Aug 17 '21

the toilets probably came from YIKEA

“The man who would survive S-21 but lose his wife—the man named Chum Mey—realized that the troops first entering Phnom Penh were mostly lost boys from the jungle, dirty and ragged with blank expressions, who, within hours of being greeted as liberators by cheering crowds, turned on the masses with their AK-47’s. In the south of the city, they fired warning shots; in the northwest sector, they fired on people. Never having seen toilets before, the soldiers drank from them as if they were cisterns, shat on the floor, wiped themselves with sticks that they left strewn about abandoned houses.”

536

u/Pentax25 Aug 17 '21 Hugz All-Seeing Upvote

I think it’s very sad. Like they’re children seeing things for the first time. That sort of awe, picking up weights with no form and pretending to ‘be like the adults’ just seems quite sad that they’ve never experienced it before.

People are saying “well how did they take a country?” But if they haven’t even seen the inside of a gym then what else haven’t they experienced? All the things that we have, that we take for granted, the things we live for, they have never had. It’s then no surprise to me that they managed to take a country because they were so willed, so stubborn and so brainwashed because all they had was this idea that the country should belong to them. They probably didn’t have an upbringing or an education in a school with play-time and kids TV and learn about things like love and fun because they were just told they had to learn to fight and kill.

196

u/LAX_to_MDW Aug 17 '21

I mean, there’s another video making the rounds of the Afghan army struggling to understand jumping jacks, so it’s pretty clear than any form of formal exercise is foreign to most of the men in the country. It kinda drives home how rural most of Afghanistan is. Iraq was a much more urban country in comparison.

112

u/Lynx2447 Aug 17 '21

Instead of walking & running where they need to go for real, they pretend to walk and run on machines.

How the hell did these guys retake their entire country in like half an hour?

557

u/Surgles Aug 17 '21

From what I’ve heard/read (admittedly not a whole lot compared to plenty of people), the army that the US trained up to leave as a force behind was at best inept and at worst massively corrupt, willing to look the other way while they came in and took over. So these guys didn’t really have to fight, and not a single bullet was fired toward them as they just came in and sat down and said “mine!”

329

u/bruce656 Aug 17 '21

A lot of them were bribed and/or threatened to lay down their arms. When the takeover was almost assured, a bribe sounds pretty sweet compared to having your family executed.

11

u/Jravensloot Aug 17 '21

Can't even completely blame them. They were stacked up against pretty shitty odds and had nowhere near enough motivation to fight the type of war the US was struggling with for decades. Most of the ANA are part time soldiers. The Taliban have a reputation for kidnapping the families of Afghan officers and assassinating soldiers at their homes or on the street. All it takes is one Taliban loyalist in your community to snitch on you and you're screwed.

Fuck.

This reminds me of college students goofing around.

And then you remember what they have done. What they will do to others.

This is so unbelievably sad, horrifying and infuriating.

I feel bad for them. I feel sick with terror for their victims.
